My son has a 20 gauge Rem 870 express and wants to add a fiber optic bead. Does anyone know if the factory bead is pressed in or threaded? and what is a good one to use?
thanks, Chris

Try TruGlo fiber optics. Most have a notch at the front so that the bead doesn't need to be removed. The bead will keep the sight from sliding forward on the rib under recoil if it isn't quite tight enough.

As you can see, the bead stays put.
If it isn't a vent-rib barrel, they offer a model that clips on around the barrel.

Notice the "V" notch at the front.
If you leave the bead on with this model it helps keep the sight centered. Without the bead theres the possiblity that it can turn or be mounted off center.

Edit: The Remington 870 Express does have a pressed-in bead. It would have to be tapped in order to mount a screw-in FO sight.
HTH,
Chris

I believe the Express bead is pressed in.
Many of them seem to break off when you try to remove them.

It may be necessary to drill the stub out before installing a new sight.

Well, get to it, and let me know if you can remove it without breaking it. In the meantime, you should use the clamp on or magnetic sights. You should be able to find them in any gun store for 10 to 20 dollars.
