I saw a Remington 870 express in a shop that was seriously in need to help - or the scrap heap. The wood was ok, but all the metal was rusty. The last 6" of barrel was extra rusty as if it had been jammed into the mud and not cleaned.

The are asking $100 for this rust bucket. If this is to be salvaged it would have to be detail stripped with all the parts derusted or replaced. The barrel could have the last 6" sawed off and the rest derusted - or just replaced.

The question; Is this project worthwhile? I have little need for another pump gun, but am attracted by the low price.

Since you are motivated mainly by the price, you may regret the additional time and money required to end up with a gun which you admit you have "little need for".

I'd have to see the gun to make a judgement, but I'm always up for a $100 (or less) 870 if it can be salvaged.

A good cleanup and a rattle can of black paint is a cheap fix...

I've made a hobby of resurrecting beater 870s. If you're near Chicago or Minneapolis, I'd be happy to help you detail strip, clean and replace/repair worn parts.

I live in Minneapolis 'burbs, moving to Chicago 'burbs end of July.
