So I took out my Rem 870 today to the range for the first time. Had an unusual occasional issue where the trigger would not "click" on the first round. I was loading six, racking one into the chamber then loading one more. When I went to fire, I had to rack again and eject the unused round in order for the gun to fire. Its like the trigger didn't reset at all. Shouldnt the trigger have reset after I racked the round, before I loaded the 7th? I think this happened one time in the middle too. I just racked out a good round and it kept shooting. Is this a break-in thing? Otherwise, I certainly had a lot of fun. :D

That's not normal, and indicates a possible problem.

First step is to go back to the range, and pay very close attention as you load and fire the gun.
If it does it again, you have a potentially unsafe, defective gun.

When you open the action far enough to feed a round, the hammer should cock.
I recommend taking it back where you bought it, or consider sending it in to Remington under warranty if the range test does show a failure to cock.

7 rounds ?

Hey There:
An 870 should only hold 6. Not 7. Unless you have some sort of extended tube.
I would say the bolt can not close all the way with 7 rounds in there. I should not be able to fire unless the bolt is fully closed.

Yes, 7 shot. Came with a 2 shot extension tube. Funny thing is that this never happens when I dryfire the gun. Could this be an ammo issue? I was using 2 3/4 shells. I agree that I need more range time to carefully document what's going on. Thanks.

Lock up.

Hey :
Make sure you can see it lock up. The extra long tube may be holding the bolt back just a little when the last load is in.
