I have heard many conflicting opinions as to whether one should or should not remove the plastic barrel supports from the factory stock on a Remington 700.

I am tuning up my .270 in preparation for the upcoming deer season, and would like to squeeze every possible ounce of accuracy from that that I can.

If I file off the little tabs I'll also slightly enlarge the barrel channel to make sure the barrel is free-floating.

Should I remove the tabs?

How does it shoot now?

My personal "minute of deer" test involves 6" paper plates: as far as you can hit one, first shot; or keep a 3-shot group on one.

If you can keep 3 shots in 2" at 100 meters, trust me, you can kill a deer.

If it won't shoot into 2", freefloat and bed the recoil lug, that should improve things.;)

I have a ADL Synthetic in 270. When new, the gun shot patterns instead of groups. I free-floated the barrel and removed the pressure point and the results were amazing. I can put three shots under an inch at 100yds pretty much at will with whatever load I have laying around. Even funky old Remington store bought ammo.

As others have stated if you can shoot 1.5-2" at 100yds that is plenty good enough for deer.

We have the same gun.

Based on your results, I plan to file off the tabs tomorrow. :)
