Hi Guys:
Anybody got any idea what those 3 inline marks are?
I realize the 4th smaller mark is an arsenal hardness test mark. So that one I'm not wondering about. But the 3 inline ......... what is that?

I've never seen anything like that. I THINK the punch mark below the center dot indicates the gun passed proof. But those three punch marks mystify me.

One GB seller stated in one of his 1903 auctions the Marines did that. I have no idea personally, but I've seen as few as one dot to as many as five since that time.

Conventional wisdom/myth...

follows that they are indicators of re-barreling and/or re-profing.

Sometimes 1 mark, sometimes 2, rarely 3 and I've never seen 4 marks... yet.

That's what I've read while researching my own Remy 1903 (ser. # 302XXXX), which isn't a Marine Remy. Punch marks, by or below the ser.#, were said to indicate a Marine issued Rem. 1903.

Mine has a red stripe over the stock and upper handguard, along with British proof marks, which means it was an early Lend-Lease 1903 that we shipped to the Brits.

The punch mark on the ledge is for proof test with a new barrel.
I don't know what those three big whacks indicate. Blame it on the Marines.
