Saw this today while out with my daughter. Was really drawn to it. Target stock, bull barrel, target peep sights. Good condition. They had it for $550.

What are the general thoughts on these?

The 513T Remington is a very very accurate rifle to shoot, designed for target shooting from 1940 thru 1968. I would pay that price only if it has the Redfield peep sights , if not offer 200 less. Oops I see it has the sights...good, you will regret not buying this rifle.

I have a CMP Remington M541 X target, and I looked at Wiki's article on the Rem 513, and heck if I know what is different between the rifles.

My rifle is relatively light compared to the Win 52's, and Anschutz rifles. Mine shoots well, as it is new, the action is stiff, and I did not shoot it enough to slick it out. I do not remember if the trigger is adjustable or not. The stock is long, as I recall, might have to buy a cut down stock for the daughter. The rifle is inherently accurate, will hold the ten ring at 50 yards. Mine came with a horrible Williams rear sight. This sight has a binding screw on the elevation base, if it is not tightened, the base rattles around. Who ever adapted the thing to a target rifle assumed that the shooter had a screw driver, and broke position every shot to adjust for elevation. It is a terrible rear sight and what is on this rifle, is better.

I believe that when these rifles were made, the NRA rules required a 3 pound trigger. Maybe it can be taken down to two pounds, as in the rifle in the video. Which would be fine for a new shooter. However, for an advanced shooter, these guys are using triggers that break in terms of ounces. I don't know anyone running an eight ounce trigger, that is too heavy!

The 541X does not have an adjustable trigger. The other models like the 541 TH&B are.

I don't know whether to look for a better trigger and better sights. As my 541 X is US property marked, in the box, it has significant value unaltered. It is not drilled and tapped for optical sights, that is a limitation for old eyes.

Shoot it enough and the trigger parts will eventually get smoothed. Williams makes a peep sight for the 541 and you might check websites for scope mounts for 541 so it should not be a problem. Start with EGW, they might have some. Just start a search for 541X parts.

Congratulations, you will not be disappointed. Don't forget to use a variety of ammo so that you can find what it likes. I shoot mine all the way to 200 yards with the peep sights. There used to be a saying that winchesters were for show and Remingtons were for shooting, this rifle shoots.

Feed it good standard speed ammo and I bet you will be even more pleased. I owned one when I was on the high ROTC rifle team. Sold it while in college. Regret that 55 years later!
