Good evening, everyone.
I'm a lurker. I always read but seldom post. Otherwise I'm over at PDO or out in the blogosphere. I had a question about an "incident" with my Remington 597 and knew this was the best place to go ask it.
To make a long story short, SOMEthing happened to my Remington 597 when I was firing it more than a year ago. All I knew was I was about halfway into the magazine and the next time I pulled the trigger, the noise was quite different and I got hot powder all over the right side of my face. No biggie, still got both eyes and the powder came off with a little soap. One of two things occured, by my reckoning:
1. Shell loaded in sideways, pointing outward from the ejection port, firing pin struck it and it went off.
2. Shell loaded properly, just had a weak spot in the brass, and most of the energy went out to the side rather than all out the end like it's supposed to.
AT ANY RATE, the only damage to the firearm I can see is that the extractor, extractor plunger, and spring were shot 50 feet out to my right side, never to be found again. Everything else looks like it survived beautifully.
So my question is, can I replace these few parts without a degree in rocket science? Or is the extractor something that requires tuning only a competent gunsmith can do?
Here's a couple of links just to give you a little perspective:
1. Remington 597 Schematic -- I need parts 19, 20, and 21 according to that diagram and by my reckoning after I took it apart.
2. Remington will sell me a spring and extractor plunger (look at the parts list from the previous link), but for some reason won't sell me an extractor. However, Volquartsen Custom, maker of some reportedly great Ruger 10/22 aftermarket parts, will.
My options are to fix it myself, pay an arm & a leg (maybe not) to have a GS do it, or sell it for parts and buy a Ruger. Thanks a bunch in advance, guys.
