Hi,

My friend has a new .270 ADL from Walmart.

He wants to take the front and rear sights off, b/c he is just using a scope.

Where can he find plug screws to fill those holes?

I would leave the irons on it if it were mine. If he MUST take them off, I would start at http://www.brownells.com.

You can call them and they have gunsmiths available to make sure you get the right size screws for what you need.

The plug screws that came out of the reciever to mount the bases will fit the plugs after removing the sights.

Yep, all screws are the same on the top of those; I just added irons to mine. Oh, and why would he take the front sight off? It will not get in the way of the scope, and it will allow the rifle to rest against a tree.

none of the irons get in the way of the scope. I have a 700 in 30.06. Left my irons on and I have a scope. But thats me, I don't like to complicate things that don't need to be complicated.

Interesting that Wal Mart still has ADLs. Remington hasn't made those for 2 years, at least. Of course most of the WalMarts around here stopped selling guns so the ones that do are no doubt benefitting from the extra stock being sent to the ones that still do.

Well it is not my rifle, but I think he wants it to look very sleek/clean.

Plus, when we hunt we can walk miles and miles. Every little bit of weight savings helps the shoulder.

:)

I will let him know the receiver plug screws will fit. Thanks!

Concerning Walmart and old guns. Walmart orders in such large quantaties it is not unusual for them to have guns sit in the stores for years. Also as some stores stop selling firearms their inventories are sent to stores that are still selling guns. K-Mart does the same thing. The last gun I bought from Walmart had been in the store for more than 5 years according to the clerk who sold it to me. Found a really nice Marlin 336, with walnut wood, that had been shipped to my local K-Mart from California after they stopped selling them there. It was close to 10 years old and still new in the box. The price was still the 10 year old price. About $50 cheaper than the hardwood stocked version setting next to it.

not entirely true.

recently put a scope on my .243. replaced the weaver mounts on it (i HATE weavre mounts!!!) with a 2pc leuopold bases and rings. i didnt WANT to take the irons off (although they are useless at this point) but the scope wouldnt fit with the rear site.

i didnt have to remove ALL of it though, i just had to take the ears off of the ramp. the ramp is still on it.

6-48 plug screws from Brownells is what you need. The Remington irons do get in the way of some scopes.

I don't know how many rifles I've seen at gun shows and for private sale that didn't have the scope and the iron sights were gone. I vote leave them alone if you can. Once removed they will get lost or never reinstalled. I look past those guns missing the sights and look for something complete. I realize you can get replacement parts from the manufacturers but its a pita...
