I might be mistaken, but I think the filler screws you remove from the receiver to install your scope mount will fit the holes left by the sights when you remove them. At least that’s where I think I got the filler screws I’ve used in the sight holes on my Remingtons.

You are not mistaken. If the rifle is new the filler screws will still be there. On an older rifle they may be long gone. And.... some newer rifles don't even use filler screws anymore. Just a plastic tab that fills the holes until you mount a scope. Most don't even come with irons any more which leads me to believe it may be an older rifle.
If so they can be ordered. Not terribly expensive, but more than you'd think. If you ask around someone probably has some they'd give you. I MIGHT have some laying around in some of my stuff. If I can find some I'd gladly mail them to you for free. Most gunsmiths have a box full where they've mounted scopes.
It is a mid 70's BDL that looks like it was never taken outside, everything is perfect. When I put the scope on it I did not have to take the sights off but the lens cover would not fit on the scope. I do have the screws but they stick up/do not fit flush.
You can get gun screws at most Ace Hardwares, look for a blue cabinet in the aisle with the nuts and bolts. Take the ones that you have to get the same thread size. I wouldn't leave them open.

Can you just remove the notch slide and leave the rear sight base in place? I've done that on a couple of rifles to make clearance for a scope/scope cover.
