I just purchased a used 700ADL in .30-06 caliber that was made in 1990.

The gun appears to have an unsteady spring that pushes the magazine follower up to feed the cartridges. It is almost acts like a see saw.

If I load the shells by pushing down and to the rear (as I do in my Savage Model 110), the magazine follower tends to rock down to the rear and the bolt does not reach the rear edge of the shell to push it into the chamber. When it does catch the edge, the shell tends to misfeed high with the point rising out of the receiver.

If I load it to the front of the magazine the first shell seems to be ok, but after that the rest tend to rock back also.

Could someone tell me if this indicates that the magazine spring (W shaped) has lost its power?

Also, it is difficult to reassemble the stock to the barrel and get the lower end of the spring to stay in the indentation in the stock which would hold the lower end more towards the back.

All of the components (magazine, spring and follower) look like new, but I have been unable to load a full magazine of 4 into the chamber without one or two misfeeds out of the four.

Is this a common problem?

Are you sure the magazine and follower are not in backwards? Yes, I did it once.

no it isn't common.
i doubt the mag spring has lost its power, but it could...

take the gun apart, make sure the mag box has at least one of its screws holding it in place. put the spring follower back in the mag box, and make sure the follower seats all the way against the feed lips. holding the rifle upside down, lower the stock into place. if that doesn't help, there are other things, but this will serve as a basis... main thing is to check the screw that holds the mag in.

The magazine is tapered so I really can only put it in correctly, I think.

Is the first round in (one at the bottom) on the right side (bolt side) of the rifle? That is how mine is.

Dakotasin:

There is only one screw in the magazine.

I did take it out after verifying that there was only one scratch in the paint which indicates that it was always in the same place.

The magazine has a slot in the wider end (rear) which is equally open from the top to the bottom of the magazine, and the magazine follower does not seem to stick on the sides.

Also, reassembly with the barrel down, makes it impossible to get the end of the spring in the slot at the bottom of magazine well. Even once it is assembled, I think it jumps out of the recess and moves forward which may allow the rear of the follower to droop.

I cleaned and lightly oiled the inside of the mag and I was thinking of putting a coat of wax on it to minimize friction.

I am certain that it is an adjustment problem of some type, but I cannot find it.

Come to think of it I believe it may have been a Savage that I managed to get the spring and follower in backwards and had feeding problems for a few min. till I figured it out.

Success!

Comparing photos from another 700ADL I noticed that the correct spring placement was to the rear of the magazine follower whereas mine was all the way forward.

Once I repositioned the magazine spring to the rear of the follower, it loads fine.

Thanks for your great advice.
