I have a remington 742 woods master 30-06.This rifle is big on accuracy, but it does not like to cycle properly.I am lucky that I have never needed a quick follow up shot. The old rifle will fire, pick up a fresh round, but it does not recock after the shot so I have to manually eject the round to cock it.Does any one have an idea as to why this happens and is this common on the woods master?Any possible qiuck fix?I love my rifle because it seems like I cant miss with it,but it is driving me nuts.

If it will cock when manually cycled, but not when fired, it sounds as if the bolt is not traveling far enough backwards when fired. I would say you should inspect and or clean the gas system.

I did the same thing to mine many years ago. I'm guessing this happened after you cleaned it? Right?

What you did is re-assemble it incorrectly. I wish I could remember exactly which piece I had wrong, but it's in the trigger mechinism IIRC.

Not a big deal if you can compare two side by side.

I've seen a lot of these rifles have this problem when loaded to full capacity or +1 what happens is a fully loaded magazine creates too much drag that slows the bolt down too much.

the 742 has a design flaw. the receiver has a dust cover that will slip off slightly and not allow the weapon the fall into full battery. there is an aftermarket fix (and i think a factory one).

My dad just gave me a 742 with bolt jammed by a broken plastic dust cover.

I pulled the trigger assembly to remove it and bolt seems move fine.

I read somewhere that it is ok to shoot without it but wanted to check that here, as this group seems to be very knowledgable on this gun.

Is there any down side to using the gun with out the dust cover other than the obvious lessened "dust" protection?

Thanks for any help...

Welcome to THR, GringoSushi.

Perhaps if you post this in Gunsmithing and Repairs section, you'll get more response.
I Googled this for a half hour searching for answers, but without success.

It might function, at least in the short run, I don't know.

Here's the part, but you probably have to disassemble the rifle to get it installed.

Thanks NCsmitty for looking into it and the link to that part.

Nice to know what the missing half of that piece looked like. I'll order one up and slap in in.
