I have a two part question involving an old 742 Remington 30-06 Woodsmaster and Remingtons managed recoil rounds.

Part 1
See the rifle cycled a whold box the 125 grain managed recoil rounds without a hitch which makes me question if I should shoot full power round threw it or not?

Part 2
Do you think the 125 gn bullets will still reliable take a Maine whitetail?

Part 1: Sure.

Part 2: Probably. (The usual deal about shot placement, of course. :D) Although I'd figure on shots inside of 200 yards, maybe. But I'm sorta conservative on that sort of thing.

Factory full power should be fine. I have been doing that for 30 years in mine. For the first time in many years I am useing my 742 for deer this year.

742 is not a high volume range toy, but if you fire a 100 rounds a year and hunt with it, it will last your lifetime...

Dad had an early one (metal butt plate) that he fired maybe 100rds a year until he died...

It came to me, and I cleaned and inspected it...The rails did have some marks, but not severe battering that I had seen in others over the years...

I passed it on to my Sister's husband who is shooting it about the same pace as Dad, and it still cycles flawlessly with 180gr Core-Lokt ammo...

I have an earlier version, the model 740. It was passed down, it was a low volume, once a year deer rifle. It still is a low volume once a year deer rifle. The rails have some unevenness but are not chewed and the bolt lugs are in good shape. It still has the Weaver K3 scope on it. I've been shooting 150 gr. Nosler BT's in it with 48 grns of IMR4895 and it shoots pretty good for a rifle that everyone calls the jamomatic. Keep it clean and well lubed and don't let the chamber rust and they cycle most any load reliable (that means for a few rounds). They need to be cleaned frequently and relubed. As a side note, Mobile 1 makes mine run very smooth.

I have a 740 ADL that was my grandfathers. The receiver is chewed up pretty good, but it cycles all ammo just fine (YMMV).

Just don't treat it like an AR and you'll be fine. Mine is for hunting only, and will keep 5 shots of cheap-o Federal 180gr SP within 2" @ 200yds which is all you really need for Western WA haha.

Have fun!

Your rifle is gas operated.

If the managed recoil rounds produce the right amount of gas port pressure down the barrel to operate the action??

They are no different then full power loads that produce the same gas port pressure down the barrel to operate the action.

Except they don't kick as much.

Remington's ballistic lab is smart enough to not produce 'managed recoil' loads that will not operate their whole line of gas operated semi-auto rifles made over the last 58 years!

Full power loads??

Choot'm Lizibet! Choot'm!
