I am helping my good friend with Parkinson's disease sell his guns. With your help I already sold all but the pump rifle.

It is a 1974 Remington 760 BDL Game Master with a 6X Leupold scope on Weaver mounts and rings, 2 boxes of ammo (90gr HP & 100 gr SP), and a new soft rifle case.

The gun is in excellent condition. I misread the date code and thought it was a 2004 and thought it was in wonderful shape for a 10 year old rifle. When I learned it was actually a 1974 I was shocked at how nice it was. Of course my friend was not an avid hunter, so I doubt he used it very much.

My reading makes me think it should sell for $550-600 equipped as it is.
However, I have had a couple of others tell me that the .243 win in this rifle was pretty scarce and that the rifle alone could bring over $700 by itself.

I just want to get my friend a fair price for the rifle and to do it in a short time frame.

Any first hand knowledge of this rifle and it's value would really help us.

IMO you would be better off to sell the rifle and scope separately. A 760 in .243 is a desirable rifle, but not many people are going to want a fixed 6x Leupold on that setup. The scope would be worth more on its own to someone looking for one.

Good point. Would it sell better if I took off the 6 power and put a 3-9X Leupold on in its place? I know another friend that likes 6 powers.

I wasn't going to buy one.
My friend has one he said he might trade. He just likes 6 power scopes for some reason.

I saw that exact model rifle sale locally for $375 but it did come with no scope. IMO $450 would be a fair price for it. GLWS hope your friend gets better.

The .243 rifle is definitely more rare than the .30-06, but the guns that really command a premium are the .308 and .243 Carbines -- they say "Carbine" on the barrel. I agree with those who suggest selling the scope separately; you won't get the scope's value selling it with the gun. And I think $550 would be a fair price without the scope. Do a search of completed auctions at Gunbroker where the gun actually sold.

Blued Bolt?

I'm not positive , but I don't think the bolts were blued from the factory
on 742s?
That may or may not cause pricing issues if the gun has been "gone over" for some reason.

Pennsylvania is the land of pump action rifles and they're not rare at all. Most on the used racks are 30-06 but .243 is encountered as well. $600. including the scope is a fair price.

The bolt is original. It looks to be chrome plated or stainless.
The bluing you see is the metal (or possibly plastic) dust cover that is also original.
Thanks for the comments I think I have a handle on it's value now.

And that price was ... (if you don't mind our asking)?

Regardless, congratulations on the sale.

While you don't see the 760 in .243 as often as in other calibers, it certainly is not a $700 gun. I recently passed on one at a shop in WVa for $395 in mint condition. I think the rig together is a $500 to $525 deal, just my opinion.
