I know there are a few Remingtons that are notorious for having problems and being of poor quality, the Remington 770 comes to mind right off the bat, but if I'm not mistaken I believe I've heard some of you say the 783 is a good one. No? I have a vague recollection of somebody posting a 783 they rebarreled and it had a wood stock and I'm pretty sure many people commented that it was a great gun, but I could be wrong and it may be a real pos. Can't find the threads that I am thinking of but I have the opportunity to buy this for under $500, is it worth it or would you steer clear.

Not sure what the significance of "1st run" implies but it doeant look used and looks like a newer gun as well but i suppose it could be an older gun in real good condition, as far as i know RemArms isnt putting out any 783's, is this a good gun or not?

The 783 was based on the Marlin XL7. It is in the same budget category as the Savage Axis and Ruger American. Can't really think of a reason to choose the 783 over the Savage or Ruger

The magazine situation is better.

That's on the high side for one. $300 is closer.
I sort of figured that it was beneath the 700 in overall quality but you're right, $500 give or take is in the ballpark of the R700 and other better quality rifles. I'm not sure why but alot of the budget rifles like the RAR and Axis seem to have jumped up in price into the $500 and up bracket.... I've been seeing Ruger Americans going for over $500 and a few years ago you could get em scoped with a Redfield 3x9 for $300.

I only know one person who has one shoots fine he has no problems from what I’ve read there not a bad rifle with many issues but even with today’s crazy prices it’s not a $500 gun

These guys hated their Rem 783

Remington 783 Rifle Review: It’s accurate, but don’t buy it.

They show they could not open the bolt after chambering a Winchester factory round. They do not show if they forced the round into the chamber. It is rare that a factory round is oversized, but if an oversized round is beat into the chamber, it can be very hard to remove. The reviewers were cryptic about why Winchester ammunition was bad. Their problem could have been an undersized chamber, or an oversized round.

They really did not like their M783.

This was not encouraging to read:

Model 783 .270 win mag won’t fire, appears the pin isn’t going all the way forward when trigger is pulled. Bought new from Scheels last week, anyone got any ideas? Also how do I take apart this damn bolt.

It's better than a 710 or 770 but I wouldn't personally buy one for more than $300, much less $500.

Its sort-of based on the Marlin X7 series as stated, and I really like my Marlin XS-7, but I paid $250 for it brand new. As stated Remington has also went bankrupt and the resserected form of the company (RemArms) shows no sign of resuming production of the 783 - just the 700.

I'd get the Ruger American or the Savage Axis. I own quite a few of the Axis rifles and they're good, however at least on the older model stocks I recommend something to stiffen the forearm (MCARBO has a 3d printed spacer kit for like $25 to do it, or you can pour epoxy countertop mix into it). Or for $500 you can probably find an actual Remington 700 ADL.

I guess i got lucky with my 770. I love it. No issues other than my lead fiasco. But that it my doing. Anyway if you don't need a 308 right away. I would wait. Prices will go down again.

My bud likes his and it has served him well. I prefer Rugers.
A short lived, out of production budget rifle, from a manufacturer that closed up shop and sold everything off already? Good luck if anything goes wrong with it. I wouldn't have high expectations to start with either.

I might pick it up as a curiosity at about $100, but that's about it.

RemArms is back in production of the 783 in the new LaGrange, Ga plant.
Report is that M700’s are in the works.

Some discussion at the GON forum.
Google won’t let the link go through.

So that's what the "first run" is all about, first run of 783 out of the new rem arms facility perhaps....

270 win mag?

I'd buy one in the $399 dollar range. I have handled them and I think they are a good design. Basically a Remington version of a Savage.

What about the 700 Alpha? Heard anything about when it may be available?

No, just that a LGS called FMJ posted a tour of Remingtons new facility and demonstrated the first completed 783 on FaceBook. I don’t do FB, so I haven’t seen the video...
a former coworker posted it to the Georgia Outdoors News forum...

I looked at one in Walmart for $329. It was in 6.5 Creedmoor. I may have bought it if it was a .308. It's gone now.

That "review" is a poor piece of work. It starts with subjectivity. Then the rifle locks up with Winchester ammo. But since they have had bad luck with Winchester shotgun shells, it must be the ammo. Then they have a bolt catch, then they can't figure out the magazine, then they don't know how 2 position safeties work. Honestly I am surprised they figured out how to load it.

There is a lot missing from their review.

Roll up a $100 and put it in the chamber and I would not give you $80 for any Rem Arms LLC made gun...

Now a pre Rem Arms 783 in 450 Bushmaster has a certain appeal to me.
