I want to buy a Remington 870 Express LH, (left hand) and I can save about $70 buying it in NH at a WalMart instead of MA: $275 versus $299 plus 5% tax.

I've heard, though, that some products WalMart sells are cheaper versions than the standard product, including some rifles. Is this the case for Remington shotguns?

I'm still trying to find out if barrels are the same for LH and RH 870's. Remington hasn't emailed me back. The LH 870 is only available in one configuration, 870 Express with 28" barrel and wood furniture. I can get dealer pricing from Brownells for another barrel.

LH barrels are not the same as RH barrels.

I have a Marlin .22 that I bought at a large chain sporting goods store. Its unlike any offering by Marlin. Turns out it was a model built for that store and only sold by them. Much like the green Remington Nylon 66's were only sold at K Mart.

Some manufacturers will sell different models at different stores but their reputation rides on all of them. Remington does not sell sub-standard guns to wal-mart or any other retailer AFAIK.

This topic comes up all the time. I myself have never been convinced that WalMart guns are really anything different than the same thing sold in a different store. It's called Economies of Scale, and when you can buy millions, you can drop the price way down.

I looked at a RH 870 last night, and the barrels must be different based on the cutout. That is a concern, as I don't find any LH replacement barrels at Brownells except for one 20" slug barrel. Are others available? I'd want an 18.5 or 20.5 as well.
