So I have not followed the breakup of Remington's assets super carefully, and I don't know what entity bought the 870 lineup. Currently, the main Remington site lists only Express models, while the Remington Defense site doesn't even list firearms. Just curious if the 870 Police is now a thing of the past.

Hard to say right now , current 870s are being built with leftover parts inventory . Who knows what their priorities will be once fully up and running . I read a lot of speculation on the internet but no concrete evidence .

As of yet, I've only seen express models with long vent ribs and wood furniture. I haven't seen anything police/tactical oriented or any synthetic furniture on any of the new Remarms products, I'd be surprised if they had the ability to produce any improved, upper tier 870's at this particular juncture. I think they are having a hard enough time maintaining QC on their lowest rung on the ladder 870 right now....

I was in kittery trading post a few weeks ago and found one of the older express 870's, it actually didn't say express but the furniture on it looked like express furniture. I might have made a mistake, it didn't say "police" or "tactical" or "special purpose". It just said "870 Magnum". It was in new condition and was $425. I probably should have bought it......

Reviews from all sources of the new Rem Arms 870s is practically terrible.

The same poor fit and finish and BBQ grill finishes.

Your best bet is to hunt for a used vintage 870 Police. They’ll last lifetimes and were actually built by people with a modicum of dignity.

There is a company that now owns the Remington firearms portion, and they're advertising the 870, including the commercial defense and tactical models.
I "assume" they're making the Police models, since that's a very lucrative model............

Remington police and military ammo is under the Remington Defense name and apparently sell only LE ammo.....

The companies name is Rem Arms.

Initial reviews are bad.

I'm giving them time to work things out but I'm not overly optimistic. I have and regularly shoot six Remington shotguns, a TB, a Classic Trap, a Wingmaster (all pre 2000 by a good bit) and an Express, fairly late. Two 1100s, both older, one a trap 12, ones field 20. None have been anything but exemplary. One is way over 250k rounds. Lowest count is still in the thousands. I truly hope they recover as I think the 870 and 1100 are true American classics.

Yeah, if Smith & Wesson revolvers are any indication, I probably missed the 870 Police boat already. They'll probably be fetching $1400 on Gunbroker.

For what it's worth... if they never again produce the "police" model... for years and years most police departments equipped their officers with standard riot configured wingmaster shotguns. Each came with a simple bead sight, four shot tube, and a plain stock w/o any checkering. I've seen them with both 18 and 20" barrels - most that I'm familiar with came with an improved cylinder bore...

I'd take anyone of them into a close quarters situation and be very confident with it any day of the week... That police model did have an improvement or two - but mostly it was just marketing, touting the basic Wingmaster design...

By the way, if you make a point of scanning Gunbroker or other sites for one of those old Wingmasters, you can count on an occasional one coming along that's in very good condition and might even be very reasonably priced if we can get past the current virus situation and have weapons pricing return to something approaching a normal situation (whatever that is..).

Amen to that. Here's one for example. It has a few upgrades and I have a couple barrels for it, a full choke 30" and a 20" IC w/ rifle sights but I still am well under $1K into this gun, even during the Corona.

Wingmaster 870's are retty much as good as it gets in the pump department. If you are insistent on keeping the police model aesthetic synthetic furniture can be found very inexpensive. You could likely sell whatever wood comes on a Wingmaster to fund the synthetic furniture and have a few $$ left over for an upgrade or two. These Wingmasters are known for being a very formidable combat shotgun when outfitted accordingly. The Nat'l Guard commissioned a hefty sum of them for combat use.....

The two people running the new Rem Arms are Ken D'Arcy and Richmond Italia. D'Arcy was CEO of Remington when it went bankrupt and Italia led the paintbalI company GI Sportz into bankruptcy. That tells you all you need to know about the future of the new Rem Arms.
