I have a 20ga 870 and was wondering if the frame is the same size as the 12ga frame. I'm exploring the idea of putting a saddle mount on it to run an optic and so far they seem to specify 12ga. If the frames are different does anyone know of a mount that doesn't require drilling the receiver?

The frames are different on most of them. I think the first couple years were built on 12 gauge frames.

The stock on a 20 will interchange with the stock on a 7400, so might be that a saddle mount could be found for a rifle.

They also make a velcro square that will adhere to the side of your reciever and you can buy elastic shotshell cards that you can have mounted on the shotgun, and also in your kit for extra shells on hand. If you expended all your onboard shells, you can just rip the card off and slap another on. They are actually pretty slick.

Of course there are cheap ones, but there are a few makes that are of high quality and for a field/defensive gun they make alot of sense, especially if you don't like the shotshell holder on the stock. I'm actually looking into these because I don't want the additional weight of a metal side saddle and the velcro seems more versatile and you don't have to screw around with pins, etc.....

How many shells are you looking to have in a side saddle? 4 is pretty typical of a 20 ga. More and the options start going down and prices up.

Here's the contact info for a guy who used to appear on this board. I figure he can point you in the right direction with any tactical question about 870's since he did a lot of work with them and is a Remington armorer (for whatever that's worth now...). Tell him I said Hi... https://tacticalgunslings.com/

You can take the barrel off and see if a quarter fits through the barrel lug. If it fits it’s a standard (12 ga receiver).

B square saddle mounts are available in 20 ga as well as 12. Amazon had some a couple months ago. Be sure to get the aluminum and not the plastic ones.
