I'm thinking of buying a Remington 870 Special Purpose USED shotgun.
I'm not familiar with the "Special Purpose" variant of the 870's can anyone please advise or provide info about this shotgun?
8 shot, Wooden stock for $350.00.

Is this one of the cheaper variants?

Does this price sound about right for used?

Thanks!

The first ones were designed for hunters with dull wood and Parkerized metal. Later on I think they started going cheaper. Nothing wrong with the ones I have seen. I think the price is a little high.

The stocks and barrels are the same as the standard 870's.
Calhoun 321 is thinking of the "Special Field" which is different.

Some of the early Special purpose shotguns came with Walnut stocks and real cut checkering. The metal was parkerized. If it is one of these guns then they are worth more than a standard Express gun. They are essentially a Wingmaster, with a dull finish. I'd gladly pay $350 for one in decent shape.

Later they changed to black or camo plastic stocks, or to the same birch wood used on the Express shotguns. The metal was a bead blasted blue. These guns may have "Special Purpose" stamped on the receiver, but are nothing more than a standard Express with a different name. In that case I'd pay no more than for a standard Express shotgun.

Look closely at the wood, If it is real walnut with cut checkering it is worth it.

Express models can be bought for 269 bucks brand new right now at Bass Pro....

last used one I bought I paid 150 bucks for. Which in my opinion is about what they're worth used.

I have one of the oil-finished wood/Parkerized 870SP guns, and it is a very nice gun. Mine does not have an extension. I would pay $350 for another without a second thought, knowing I am getting a Wingmaster without the fancy finish.

I love the 870SP in the wood/Parkerized trim.

I've got an 1187 Special Purpose with 26" barrel that I love. Mom bought new for @ $950.00. Love it.
