Remington Bullets

For years and years I have loaded the 180 grain round nose Remington CoreLokt for my hunting needs in the .30-06.
I used my last just recently and no one supplies them any longer.
Anyone know of a stash somewhere.

I just checked Midways site and they don't list the 180 Grain ROUND NOSE.
I saw a bag of 500 at a gun show some time ago.
Guess I shoulda bought 'em.

See if you can adapt the 170 grain Remington RN Core-Lokt .30-30 bullet using 165 grain powder data slightly reduced and work up to a viable loading...Might be a bit lighter then the 180 grainer, but I bet it will work until you can find more of the 180 grain RN...

Hornady makes a 180 gr RN.

I'd try them or Remington 180 PSPs before substituting a .30-30 bullet.

I did in fact load up some 180 grain psp's for my grandsons '06.
May be the only way out after shooting the round nose for the last 40 years or so.
I always had very good results with Core Loks and am really reluctant to change.

I used to use the Remington 180gr RN too. I switched to Speer 180gr Round Noses and didn't notice the difference. Or as the other gentleman said, you may want to try the Hornady version; a friend of mine uses those and loves them.

If you look at the Remington and Speer version head on, the Remington shows more lead exposed at the tip. Even so, the deer I've shot with the Speers went down just as quickly as with the Remington.

I too wish the RN was still available.

The 180gr PtSP, though not quite the bullet the RN is, is suitable for what you'll want to do with it.

They may not expand as well at the lower velocities the RN will, but they won't blow-up on the high end either.

I use the 180gr PtSp's in my .300RemUltMag at ~3,300fps and they still don't "come apart" on deer at under 50yds.

The deer do, though.............

But I have to be careful the rifle dosen't draw blood on "both ends".

The 180 round nose is still available in Remington factory ammo so they still produce it.
Can't understand why the bullet is no longer available for reloaders.
The .270 caliber 150 grain Core-Lokt, another favorite of mine has also met it's demise.
I have used Remington bullets almost exclusively over the years with very good results.
Guess I'll have to research Noslers or something.

Using a bullet designed to function at 30-30 velocities at 30-06 speeds will be a sure fired recipe for total bullet failure. Possible resulting in wounded non recoverable game.

Yes, the 170gr RN is designed to open up at .30/30 impact velocities. However, it will also stand up to .30/30 muzzle velocities as most of what gets shot with a .30/30 is at just over knife-fighting distances. (from my LE training, I KNOW that someone under 21', with a knife is an immediate threat!!!). Some of MY deer shot with a .30/30 have been that close......


The 170gr Corelokt will suprise you !!! Fired from a .30/06 at ~2,700fps, it'll be down to 2,250fps at 100yds, or about muzzle velocity for a .30/30. Published B.C. for it is 0.205 (My handloads run just a tad over 2,300 for .30/30)

I've had VERY good luck with the Speer 150FN at ~2850fps from the .30/06. The 170gr Corelokt may be just what you're looking for.
Only way to know is try them.
But I still say try the 180 PtSP-CoreLokts. They're very good, too!

And Yes, I know the Factory loads are still available, for over $25.00 a box....of 20! or about what it cost me to load 100 of them from my "stash".

So what do you do if your deer is 45yds away?

Buy a .30-30 Winchester lever gun. Or if you prefer a Marlin. We could play "what if" games all day...

At 45 yards I doubt it would matter what you shot or threw at it. It, more then likely, would be dead...

The 180 Winchester power point is a pointed bullet but it works great and is inexpensive.
