Have a chance to examine a (possible) used remington custom shop rifle in .30-06 and if in good condition am tempted to buy it. Are there any marks on these rifles that say they are from the custom shop? Is there any date stamps on custom shop rifles that indicates manufacture date? Finally are they as good accuracy wise as my friends say they are? Thanks for your help/replies in advance. Peter

Call 1-315-895-3288, Custom Shop number. Or, email them with the serial number, ask them to check the serial number for you.

As far as accuracy, see if you can shoot it and see.

The joke locally is a custom shop rifle is a rifle off the assembly line that someone carried through the custom shop to the shipping department. I know several people who've worked at the Arms down in Ilion, and I'm less than enthused about the average workmanship.

I don't know if this is true for all Remington Custom Shop guns but mine says custom shop on the barrel. Pretty easy to tell it's from the Remington Custom Shop. :)

I made the sad mistake of shelling out $1700 several years ago for a 700 that came out of the remington custom shop, it was a total P.O.S. that would not group as well as my 1100, no matter what load I tried.
You would be better off just buying a standard production 700 and having a smith accurize it.

Thankyou all for your advice - all of it excellent. There aren't many custom shop rifles in Australia hence my interest. They want top dollar so a range test and authentication makes sound sense. Don't know if they will come at this however. I'm buying this as a deer rifle not a closet dweller...maybe I'll keep looking. Once again thanks - Peter

I have 2 custom shop rifles, and they both have Remington Custom Shop stamped on the barrel. Both of mine are fantastic. You other guys must have gotten turds.

I spoke to a guy in the custom shop a couple of months ago. The guys that work there, have been there a long time. The fellow I spoke to had 20 plus years on the line before getting into the shop.

I think the more bells and whistles that are involved, the more tuning goes into the rifles. You can get custom wood for the rifle, they use an outfit called Calico Hardwoods.

I asked the accuracy question myself, I was told 1 MOA max. I then asked if the test target could be sent along with the rifle, fellow said that shouldn't be a problem, to just request it on the final order form.

Being the thrifty sort, I haven't resigned myself to come off the money to build anything yet.

peterc, I don't think it would be unreasonable for the seller to let you test fire the rifle, after all you stated they wanted "Top Dollar" for it.
