Remington Model 12 reassembly problem

Friend brought this by to see if I could help. Picked up a Model 12, looked up the directions and disassembled to clean it out(did it right, far as I can tell).

Problem is that when you try to reassemble it, the rear portion of the received goes most of the way into place, and then stops. If you push the bolt release right in front of the trigger guard, then it goes back together, BUT the bolt will not lock closed. It appears that the slide is not moving quite far enough forward to allow the carrier to lock it.

Is there some oddity about putting this back together that we're doing wrong? From what I can find in my assembly/disassembly book, and the original manual(found online) we're doing it right.

Did the gun lock up before? If it cycles and lifts the carrier, the lock up may have been bad to begin with.

I know there's some idiot-simple thing we're overlooking, and it's annoying as bleep.

Well, I'm not sure why, but it works now.

Took the slide and mag tube out, cleaned and lubed, went through the "!(#*$&#***" moments during reassembly, and now it locks and unlocks properly. So I have no bleeping idea why it wouldn't, but it does now.
