i just bought a semi auto remington 740 chambered in 30-06. it's an old girl i bought to fix up. i can't find a replacemeant stock for a 740.
are the 7400 the same thing?
i'd also like to do some work to the action, spring kit ect... but don't know where to look.
thanks!

You are asking about a model even Remington doesn't give much support for anymore, so the after market isn't going to do much for it either.

Yes, its common enough. It just has a bad reputation for jamming up, especially with remington ammo for some reason. Keep the chamber clean as a whistle and the bolt channel free of debris. Do not use it as a target rifle; sight it in and hunt with it. Shoot it six or ten times a year & you may never have to experience a jam.

Here is an aftermarket stock:

Yes I believe the 7400 stock will fit it; but you will need a screw to go with it. (Length is different.)
That model is notorious for "chamber cancer". If the barrel gets even a little rusty with very minor pitting it will pull the rim off cases every time you fire it. Turns it into a single shot. Wife inherited one from her DAD. There is no cure save a new barrel.
I polished the chamber, etc. everything I could think of, no joy.
Bought her a 7400 to replace it. I had cut off the stock of the 740 for her short arms. Didn't want to cut off the new stock on the 7400 so I swapped them.
Shoot it before you make big plans for it.

There are places that accurize these animals for nice money.

The problem these rifles have is when they get worn. If you look inside at the left side of the receiver there is a long skinny flat bar. When that bar wears it will get worn down to almaost a knife edge on the top and those are the rifles that have issues. They are simply worn out. And Remington does not support them anymore. I have one. All the stocks for the 742, 7400 and new 750 are supposed to fit these rifles.

thanks guys!
i don't have big plans or plan on using it for a target rifle, i picked it up scoped out for $250.00 and i want to lighten it up, and re-blue it. a few days each season we do deer drives on some small island surrounding are's (salt water thick brush) i don't want to take my good rifles on these trips anymore!
how do i know what length replacement bolt i will need to fit the stock to the gun?
it will shoot 150 grain bullets all day without jamming but constantly jams on 180 grain bullets.
lol but both were remington ammo!!

I have an old 740 too....I still have the original wood stock but I swapped it with a Ramline synthetic which fits the 742 and the 7400 also (~$70)

A more pricey option is to replace it with the original Remington stock (synthetic or wood) for the 7400, it fits the 740 perfectly.

My 740 doesn't jam at all, it has been very reliable but I would like to get a 7400 too.
