i saw one at a yard sale today (lots of guns) for $150. i was confused however because it said 30-06 on the sticker. i asked if it had been converted and the guy told me that the funsmith he took it to said it looked factory.

so anybody know if they actually made some in 30-06?

maybe it was converted a long time ago?

or maybe its really 7.62x54r? that would be my guess what do you think?

ive been looking for one of those...figures the gun you want always pops up when you are cash strapped.

Most of those are old (20's and 30's) Bannerman .30'06 conversions from the post-war stockpile after the Czar took a dive. The safety issue gets debated extensively. The "official" word, to the extent there is one, advises against firing any of them or any Mosin conversion. Personally I would get it chamber cast by a smith and determine whether any of the case length or head was insufficiently supported. Even then it might be OK for light M-2 ball loads but I would be wary of capping off hot hunting loads from it. Esp. if the shoulder doesn't have much steel around it because of the cuts.

They are historically interesting conversions provided they haven't been further hacked up. I would pay $150 for a good quality example.

if it says remington on it i'd take a chance and buy it. They might just think it is .30x06 or something, probably collectable even if it was converted.

if it was converted to 30-06 it will have a large gap in the stock right infront of the chamber. to convert them to 30-06 they had to have about 3/4" cut off the chamber end of the barrel then rethreaded & reamed out to 30-06. the reason theuy are considered unsafe to shoot is because when the barrel was shortened & rehhambered to 30-06 the reamer had to be ran to far out past the barrel shank. the bolt head on bannermans is also black. for $150 i would snatch it up just to add a second one to my collection.
if the barrel shank looks like this you have a conversion

thx for the picture dirtyjim if i remember right that is it. maybe ill go back and see if its still there on sunday.

i've said it before the bannermans are safe to fire

some rifles were converted to .30-06 by random "gunsmiths" where the barrel was not set back... these ARE unsafe to fire

if the barrel shank is the correct length the main way of finding out is looking at the boltface... also you could drop a .30-06 round in the chamber.. if the ass end of the cartridge sticks out a bit from the chamber it's 7.62x54r

if it's a remington m91 in original configuration $150 is theft... buy it and run like you stole something

if it's a bannerman $150 is also a steal of a price
