Remington Ruger comparison

I have guns from both manufacturers. Most of my Remington guns are really old (12 gauge model 11, nylon 66, etc.) I have a express 870 and a wally world 700, both of early 90's vintage. All of these guns work just fine. My Rugers range from my 70's standard model or mk 1 or whatever I am supposed to call it, a 10-22 I got in the late 80's, and a couple of RAR rifles. Mrs. Fl-NC carries a LCP. They all work as advertised too. In the end, I guess a gun that does what you need it to do when you need to do it is what matters the most. Lucky for me, I don't need any more guns.

Here is a tangible comparison. Both are about the same in MSRP and quality for that matter. So here we go down the rabbit hole.

I own one Ruger now and it is the American in 30-06 and if I had to compare it to lets say the Remington 710 in the same caliber. I used to own a Remington model 710. For me both are fairly equal in performance. My only complaint about the Remington is the bolt would come out of the action intermittently when chambering another round after firing the first round. This was a manufacturing defect of course.
My Ruger on the other hand I don't care for the plastic stock it just feels flimsy to me. Over all it is a great rifle.
I have also owned a Remington 700 ADL and absolutely liked the hell out of it meaning I had no complaints. I wish I still had it. Unfortunately I can't give an honest comparison to lets say the Ruger M77 with is basically nothing more than a 98 Mauser action. So lets hear what some others have to say.

The Ruger American should not be compared to the Remington 710 or 770. They are not in the same class. I think a comparable Remington model to Ruger American is the 783.

Remington 710 and 770 are quite possibly the cheapest bolt actions ever manufactured. They make the Savage Axis seem luxurious with its metal receiver.

I think of the Ruger M77 (1st and 2nd gen) as a beater version of a late 1950’s (post-war pre-64) Winchester Model 70.

I gave examples of what I considered very real short comings for both models based on my consumer/owner experience.

So what are you basing your fact or opinion on? Was it what one of the many a gun scribe past or present has written? What is your personal experience? Please share with us all.

I’m not aware of any “gun scribe” who has written about the Remington 710, but maybe that remark was made in jest?

The Remington 710 cannot be rebarreled with its barrels press fitted into its plastic receiver. The Ruger American is by comparison rugged and lasts forever. I don’t think they are in the same class, which is saying something as the American is Ruger’s bottom budget model.
