Remington UMC Ammo?

I got really good accuracy with UMC in 10mm, but don't use the stuff because it is overpriced by about 50% compared to Federal American Eagle 10mm practice ammo.

I was extremely suprised by the quality of the UMC 10mm rounds that I purchased. I was pretty much forced to use UMC, as it was the only 10mm FMJ that I could get at the time I wanted to try out my newly-converted Colt Mk IV.

However, I'm never going to use it in any of my .45s again. Nasty stuff that loves to jam.

Mike...

I think I may not have made myself entirely clear.

I was referring to Remington UMC .45 ACP, 230 grain FMJ factory loads. If they make a 230 RNL I wasn't aware of it.

The point I that was trying to convey was that firing 100 rounds of Remington UMC .45 ACP, 230 grain FMJ factory loads will not crud up a .45 auto as much as 100 rounds of ammunition, reloaded or not, using 230 grain lead bullets will.

Still wanna bite?

Well, it depends...

Every gun is different, and each has its preferred load. I buy each gun what it prefers.

My stainless 3" Taurus 85 is very partial to Rem-UMC 130gr FMJ. Anything else (factory cheapie ammo) groups much larger in that gun.

My S&W4006 hates UMC, but loves Win-USA 180gr.

The S&W 39-2 hates both Rem-UMC and Win-USA, but loves PMC.

The DW .357 gets his own special handloads. Either a 125gr jhp or 158gr hard cast swc

I've never really noticed that one brand of factory new ammo is 'dirtier' than another. Then again, I probably shoot 100rnds of each caliber when I go to the range. I don't notice that the Taurus gets any dirtier than the others. The reloads that are sold at a local indoor range smoke like they're half black powder. Those are so nasty, sooty and dirty that I wouldn't shoot them again if you gave them to me. Same goes for those UltraMax commercial reloads. Nasty.

About the cleanest burning ammo in any handgun caliber I have used has been CCI Blazer.

Again, these are just my observations. Your particular experiences may be different. That's why there are the various brands to begin with!

"Still wanna bite?"

Yep.

I'd bet hard money that my lead loads and Rem-UMC's jacketed loads aren't that far apart dirt wise. And I'd not be at all surprised if Rem-UMC outsoots my loads.

The simple fact of the matter is, though, that when it comes to other similar ammos, Rem-UMC is just the freaking pits. I've got a hunch that they extend their powder with shredded foam rubber.

Cougar,

The smoking and sooting in most lead-bullet loads is a factor of the lube used. A good quality hard lube normally won't smoke as badly as a soft lube.

do you thr posters remember back in may of this year, bass pro shops had their ridiculous sale of $3.80 for a box of 50 9mm winchester white box? of course due to all you other thr posters, by the time i got to my local store, they were sold out. :D however, they did had umc as a substitute. i remember thinking of the general consensus that it was dirty. but then further remembered it was only $3.80 a box!

i did get a raincheck from the counter as well. and the happy ending is that the umc ammo has been running fine through my glock 19 which is also rather easy to clean.

Mr. Irwin...

That's close enough to a concession for me. :D

"That's close enough to a concession for me."

Yep, you just conceded that Rem-UMC is crap on a fecal cracker...

You don't say where you are, but I'd be willing to send you 50 of my .45 ACP handloads to put up in a test against Crap-UMC, er, Rem-UMC's ammo :)

It will have to wait until I get my new press up and running, though. The Lee Turret is on its last legs.
