Looking for a new varmint rifle in Sportsmans Wharehouse, I came upon these to Remingtons; the VLS and XR-100. I have been looking for one for a while and these two seem best to fit the bill.

The XR-100 (in .22-250) is available now for $750 (+ tax) and the VLS (22-250) is available now for $650 (again + tax). I have heard the XR is more accurate than the VLS but is it worth the extra $100?

If I get one of these, they will be 99.9% used for paper hitting (possibly out to 300-400 yards) and the 0.01% will be used just incase coyotes come onto my property . Which do you think will serve me better for my purposes, the VLS or XR?

Thanks for the answers!

JUST BUY SOMETHING already.

Really, I cannot for the life of me figure out what makes one model heavy barreled rem700 any more special than another. Even comparing a Cheap sps to a 40x. Any of these model will put bullet holes in things at great range

From Shooter's Corner...

V61. 222 Rem M722, Remington mod 722 action; factory 26” bbl, many rnds, but still grps well; factory wood stock; factory Rem trig c.1lb; inclu: Weaver scope mnts; c.90-92% cond. An all original 1950’s vintage in VG+ condition. $429.

Betcha this old $429 rifle will group better than a more than a few new boomsticks at twice the price...

And for a few dollars more...

Ezell; VG-Exc cond. Includes a 3 shot grp of .5 @ 200 yd shot recently. $849. (Over $1500. invested)

V11. 22-250 Rem 40X, Rem blued single shot action; factory SS 27¼” bbl <300 rnds; factory Rangemaster wood stock; c.2 lb 40X trig; includes Redfield scope bases; exc cond. A late ‘70’s or early ‘80’s vintage all orig rig in unusually good cond. $1099.

V12. 22-250 40X Rangemaster, Rem blued single shot action; factory hvy SS 27¼” bbl 3-400 rnds; factory Rangemaster wood stock; Rem 2 oz trig; includes Redfield 1’ scope mnts; Near Exc cond, slight marking of buttstock. A good buy on an only slightly used piece. $1089.

I voted for the VLS 'cause that's what I've got....

I'd opt for neither. Go with bogie's recommendation. If you can catch Bob White when he's not busy, he can recommend something that's proven to be accurate instead of taking a chance on a new rifle.

Also, since your after Wylie Coyote, I'd suggest a repeater, so the 700 VLS is more up your alley compared to the single shot XR. Or skip the rifle and give him ACME rocket-powered skates.

Would it be a better investment (seeing the election coming up) to go ahead and get an AR15 just in case of another ban?

That would be a terrible waste of money. Reality Check: If things get so bad you actually need something like an AR-15 - you simply find someone who has one and take it away from them.

I wouldn't spend the extra $ for the XR-100.

Auburn1992,

Less than an inch/MOA at a 100 with generic factory white box stuff. I haven't worked on a load for it. Been side tracked with a Savage 110 LH in .308 and a M70 in .270 WSM.
