i need to remove a live (good) primer fom a shell, i reprimed it but it did not get resized. i have heard of spraying something down inside the shell, but i do not know what. what is the safest way?

What kinda case? If it's a tapered or straight-wall, you could just pop the decapper out of your die and resize with it in there. You could probably do it with a bottle-neck case if your decapper/expander can be adjusted a lot higher.

FieroCDSP, ITS A .300 WIN MAG.
Atticus, i thought of that, i just dont want to clean the barrel for one shot, just lazy i guess.

Primers fire by shock not pressure. Slowly pressing the primer out of the case with the de-priming stem is not going to set it off. I have even used a Lee de-priming tool and plastic mallet to dislodge live primers numerous times (not that I'm recommending the practice). Safety glasses would be prudent, as would ear protection.

Like above decap it. Use a little common sense and do it easy, with ath amount of leverage you have with your press you're safe. I've also done it a few hundred times, the worse thats going to happen is you'll hear a mild bang. After all you're not dealing with C4.

Assuming you only need to FL size the cases before finishing loading, don't bother to remove the live caps. Just screw the decaping/expanding rod up enough to prevent it contacting the primer and size/expand normally.

On the other hand, don't worry about punching out a live primer. There is VERY little chance of it popping and, even if it does, it will be safely contained within the die so there is no danger of injury to you and it sure won't harm the die (but I would suggest you remove the die and clean any primer debris before continuing if you do set one off).

it came out without a hitch. i had never run into that before. just one of the fringe benifits of getting older. the body isn't the only thing slowly going soft!

It won't go off if you are careful. Like someone else said, any penetrating spray will also soak it and render it a flammable material but not a detonable material, and virtually eliminate the possibility of a shock initiation.

Whoops, I should have read your last post. Looks like you didn't need any further suggestion.

You CANNOT kill primers with chemicals!!

Matt 304--This has been discussed ad nauseum on this and other fora. There is no reasonably safe household chemical that will reliably kill primers 100%. Not WD-40. Not bleach. Not lubricating oil. Not boiling water. Not snake oil nor witch juice. People have experimented with many, many ways to kill primers. Nothing that's been reported kills 'em 100% except: Percussion (hit 'em with a hammer) or heat (toss 'em into a fire).

I assume that fuming nitric acid would do the trick but most people don't have that to hand at home. And it's nasty to work with.

I'm sure it's covered under Murphy's Law: If you get one smidgen of oil on a round you actually want to fire normally, the primer may get killed, and you certainly can't depend on that round going bang when you pull the trigger. But if you WANT to kill a bunch of primers, when you soak 'em in oil, only some of 'em are killed.

Or, statistically: The liklihood of any given outcome actually occurring is in inverse proportion to the desirability of that outcome.

As has been pointed out above, they're not that hard to deprime if it needs to be done. No need to try spraying them first.
