Well it looks very hopeful that I finally have a job coming my way. So it will be time to start renting a place. Anyone have experience with Renters Insurance and firearms coverage??

The job is in Kentucky so suggestions for companies is also welcome.
I am currently with state farm and am happy with their automobile insurances prices (only insurance i have currently) but don't know how comparable the rate will be if i move to KY. So definatly willing to look at other companies.

Another thing to consider is liability insurance; can get that through the NRA too.

Why?

Cuzz if it's an intentional shooting, and most defensive shootings are, then most homeowners/renters insurance will not cover any legal fees if you end up in court (civil and/or criminal). They only cover you if it's an accidental shooting.

Even a good shooting could cost you as much as $50,000 to prove it was a good shooting...

I added some of the extra NRA insurance a few years ago. I like it becuase within reason it covers all of my guns for what I say they are worth.

Though I never been in his house, I know that Black92LX has personal property other than guns. You still need renters' insurance, whether you use it to cover your guns or not.

Lexington, I assume?

my agent at state farm had no problem putting my guns on my renters policy. then again, living in alaska we dont have to deal with anti-leaning personal politics.
check with state farm, see what they say. you would probably also qualify for a multi-policy discount, that just may pay for the renters policy.

American Family Insurance has a $1200 limit on my base homeowners policy. I suppose I could up it when I get that AR15 I've been dreaming about.

Black92LX, I'm also going through the process of getting renter's insurance for my new place. I'm graduating in a few days and have a job I'll be starting in January so it was time to get a new place. I'm probably going with state farm and am calling them tomorrow to figure out how much coverage I need. My mom had talked to them earlier and told me a few things I needed to find out for when I talk to them. One of the things was the total value of my firearms collection. She didn't say anything about having to list what I own but you never know. I'll call tomorrow or Monday and find out.

I have state farm renter's insurance and I think they have a $3k limit on guns. I didn't have to list what guns I had, just said I have $XX in guns.

Lexington is correct. Though not a 100% yet. I was selected as an aleternate. So long story short 3 people need to drop out prior to or a few weeks into the academy for me to get a spot.
Though the HR lady said that since she has been there every class has dropped more than 3 people. So my chances are still very very good but we will just have to wait and see.

Let me know if you are free for lunch anytime next week and I'll give more details.

Thanks for all the input. I hadn't even thought about the NRA insurance.

For State Farm, you just say how much you have in guns; if you have more than the base amount; the increase is very minor.

I have been very happy with them all the way along- not always the cheapest, but I do think they are the best.

Nothing that couldn't be solved by a little spec-op with the help of GregL and yesterdaysyouth.

Funny you are about the 5th or 6th person to offer that same assistance

No need. I got the call this morning! I am now an Official Lexington Fayette Urban County Government Police Recruit!

Congrats! Welcome to the Law Enforcement family.

BTW, I used to carry State Farm renters insurance a lifetime ago before SWMBO came in to simplify my life. the rates were rediculously low for the coverage provided, and there were no problems with firearms, just wanted to know an approximate value for what I owned, to ensure olicy limits met my needs. And, you might qualify for a multi-policy discount. Your current agent can probably recommend an agent in Lexington.

damn... i was ready too...

so when do you begin?

I have State Farm renter's insurance, and have checked into adding supplemental insurance for the guns, but haven't done so yet because they wanted a list of serial numbers.

No experience with Renters Insurance- when I liven in Apartments, I never kept anything of value in the form of possesions and I never believed in giving insurance companies any more than I need to.

Gun insurance- go through the NRA.

Be sure to break in those jackboots at home so you don't get blisters on the job.

Seriously, congratulations. I can't remember if you are still bouncing from girl to girl but I hear cops have groupies.
