I am looking to replace the barrel on my 1911 with one of those drop-in barrels. Does anyone have any experience with these types barrels? What is the difference between drop-in barrels and non drop-in barrels?

remember that "drop in" barrels may not fit just right. If you are planning on running stout ammo you should really check the lugs to make sure they all match up.

Most lug engagement is pretty low. A smith can tell you pretty quick, I am not an expert on how to check it. I've tried various methods but still can't quite figure it out, that being said it IS important.

When replacing a M1911 barrel, you should also take the time to fit a new bushing to it as well. This is what will affect the accuracy of the barrel.

Most good aftermarket barrels will be a bit oversized so the owner/smith can fit it to a new bushing. Or you can buy a barrel with bushing pre-fitted to the barrel.

I would recommend Kart barrels, not only are they exceptional barrels, but there usually is no wait to get them. (since you live in Saratoga, CA, I'm sure that you can afford one ;) )
