Replacement Giraud cutters

Id like to replace the cutters on my Giraud with a standard square insert, but I dont even pretend to know anything about machining inserts. The idea also came from looking at a Henderson trimmer and the fact they just use what looks to be a flat cutter, and you do the chamfer deburr after trimming. I pondered buying a Henderson, but honestly I dont like having to insert my case into a holder everytime, so the Giraud is a little faster there.

I dont hate the Giraud inserts, but I change calibers often enough that setting it up perfectly to cut the correct length and chamfer/deburr is getting annoying. I thought about buying spare cutter heads but at $51 a pop, and Id need 8 of them, that starts to get spendy fast. I also dont mind doing a quick chamfer deburr by hand as I work thru priming.

My thought was to use a 1/8" thick, 1/2"X1/2" insert like this: https://www.grainger.com/product/MICRO-100-Square-Turning-Insert-1-2-18D740
Would this work? Do I need to worry about clearance angles? A chip breaker function might be useful to prevent bird nests? Any better options that someone that knows more about this than me can think of? Any cheap options out there as this is honestly a pretty low stress environment its going to live in so it doesnt need to be fancy?

For now I just want to buy 1, and give it a try. If it works well, Ill probably switch over to doing all my brass with a standard cutter like this.

I met a guy on this page about 2 years ago, I sent him a piece of brass for each caliber I reloaded, he made me a full set of inserts that have a single body and multiple inserts to change calibers, all I had to chance was the length, it works just as well as the Girauds, I don’t remember what he charged me but I would without a doubt what is was and order again.

Maybe you could search the sites to see if anyone builds trimming devices that may interest you. Attached below is a Picture of my generic trimmer and the inserts. First is the inserts, secondly is the trimmer.

Of course, the trimmer body is not this large, compare it to the trimmer spacers.

Good luck

I still have my WFT2, with a bunch of inserts, which looks pretty close to what you have!
I just want to simplify my Giraud a bit.

Glad it still working out for you.

I PIF most of it but you wanted to cut larger mouths than I had setup for. So you only paid for the end mill, then I machined the holder to take the larger mill. I think I made 3-4 more inserts for your calibers that I did not have.

What calibers are you seeking

i LOVE IT…. It is great, I haven’t used it for everything yet, but I’m getting closer.

I picked up a couple of new carbide cutters off Amazon and swapped them in this AM.
They fit fine, and most importantly, give a completely clean flat cut on the brass with just a very small burr. Once you do a quick chamfer and deburr, they are perfect.
HHIP 6021-2422 SPG-422 TiN Coated Carbide Insert
Cost was $10 for 2 of them, with 4 cutting edges, so 16 cutting edges.
