Hello again,

I got some good advice in my last post here http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=203836 (wondering whether or not a Savage would be a good choice for a first rifle). Thanks for that guys :)

Today I happened across one of the suggested Savage package deals, the 12FVXP in .223, and the first thing I noticed was just how...well...cheap and plastic-y the stock felt. I've got such little experience, but I can't believe that stock would be acceptable to folks with more experience.

I've read in a few posts here that many Savage owners have replaced these synthetic stocks with higher-quality ones, so I'm looking for suggestions. If I go with one of their models that has a synthetic stock (I'm thinking 10FP or 12FV), what are some suggestions as far as brands to look into for a more solid-feeling stock? It'd be for target shooting, so I'm not too worried about adding a bit of weight (don't get carried away though :D ).

Thanks

I'm using the original synthetic stock that came with my 12FVXP

Really? It just didn't feel solid to me, though maybe that speaks more to that particular store's handling of their rifles...they didn't seem to take cleaning too seriously: the barrels were covered with fingerprints. Other than the stock, that guy was beefy: it just feels like it stand up to some punishment. I'm looking forward to getting my first :D

Keep those suggestions coming!

New stock

Bassguy--Have you checked out Boyd's Gunstocks www.boydsgunstocks.com ? They do make stocks for Savages, tho' the Mdl 12 isn't listed in last years' catalogue. I'd call Boyd's and ask them if what they have fits what you've got. (605) 996-5011

Boyd's does heavy target/varmint stocks as well as more standard hunting models.

When I wanted a stock for a Yugo M-48 Mauser they were very helpful to me in getting me a stock that (a) fit my Yugo, and (b) was just what I wanted.

Most of what they sell is laminates, but they do do walnut stocks also. The laminates are usually sold in "Nutmeg" or "Pepper" colors, but they also have a number of wild colors you can have on special order.

Anyhow, suggest you give 'em a try.

 I'll tell you what Smokey Joe, those may be just what I was looking for. Now I've just got to decide on the rifle model. I'll give Boyds a call and see if they make stocks to the model 12 specs and go from there...thanks!

The Bell & Carlson Duramaxx stock is a very good, relatively inexpensive option too. Not a radical stock, but a solid one and a comfortable one.

the model 10 stock will fit a model 12...

Savage Models 10 and 110

The Savage Models 11, 12, 16 are the same action as the model 10 and the 111, 112, 116 are the
same action as the 110. Boyds' Savage Models 10 and 110 are cut out for the standard sporter barrels.
If you have a bigger barrel you will need to relieve some wood out of the barrel channel.

There was a 110 short action made in the 60's. Our stocks are cut for the 110 long action. Please refer to the
JRS intermediate action stock for these models.

here is my 10FP with a boyds stock...

I just replaced the original synthetic on my 10FP with a Bell & Carlson Varmint/Target/Tactical. Total cost, $209. I have a post up with pics.

The original stock wasn't bad, but the comb was way too low with my scope/mount set up. I put a Beartooth comb kit on for a while that did a good job cheaply. If you're 'financially constrained' like me, it's a good way to get shooting and work your way up.

I have a Duramax on my Savage and am very happy with it. I got mine from Midway.

What is the Duramax stock made out of? Fibergalss? I like the look of your rifle! I have looked at Savage but the plastic stocks are just about the cheapest looking/ feeling that I have seen on any centerfire rifle.

I thought of going with one of their stainless laminated stock rifles , those stocks look very nice and feel extremely solid.

What is the Duramax stock made out of?

same material as the savage factory stock, but the molding is "beefier" all teh way round so to speak in the case of the duramax. B&C is the maker of the savage factory unit btw.

personally i prefer the stocks sold under the Stockade brand or from Sharpshooter's Supply (same stocks, different model names), and regardless of what stock you choose from where ever, a new milled recoil lug from Sharpshooters is a good idea the factory lugs tend to be "off" (not flat and slightly canted to one side) enough to cause additional work in inletting any stock.

Unless you are really bothered by the looks, buy the rifle and shoot it. Savage synthetic stocks are short on looks, but the barrels are freefloated and will shoot quite nicely in spite of their looks.:D

Two of the three I own are synthetic (FP10 in 223 and a 111 in 338 WM) and both shoot sub moa all day long. The other is a 375 h&h Safari Express and came with a nice wood stock and shoots right at moa (still working on handloads, so may make the magic moa yet).

Don't worry about the flex in forend, it won't hurt a thing. If you like, you can epoxy a steel rod in the channel under the barrel to stiffen up the forend, but it won't help/hurt the shooting.

hps

I still have the original stock on my 10FP, however; if I were looking for a new one, I would go wit the bell and carlson medalist tacical stock.

I just think it looks sexy, and the reviews I have read are damn good!

Detrious is right on..do yourself a favor and get a stock from SSS (Sharp Shooter Supply). Awesome stocks, and you can find one to fit most any situation...very well made!

I've had B&C stocks, and like them a lot, but they don't compare to SSS's stocks.

Detritus: personally i prefer the stocks sold under the Stockade brand or from Sharpshooter's Supply (same stocks, different names, with the exception of the SVT stock from SSS),

Detritus:
Do you have URL or contact info on SSS? Assume they have Winchester stocks as well? Looking to replace a wooden stock on a Mod. 70 w/synthetic. Thanks!

yes, their website is Here looks like they're finally updating the stock section (adding the new rimfire stocks most likely) b/c the link to that portion isn't fuctioning, the "custom stocks" entry in the menu is regular text instead of a clickable selection.

Sorry, unfortunately for owners of non-savage rifles, the parts and stocks SSS sells are exclusively Savage oriented. Fred (the owner) has enough work just selling upgraded parts for, and doing action jobs on, savages, to last him the rest of his working life.

good luck in your search for a suitable synth stock for your M70 though

12GV would be better if you can get it.

After decoding Savage's page this is the one you may like better.
Codes
The model number is the base gun
http://www.savagearms.com/code.htm
Then just decode the letters after. You'd probably really want a 12GV which is hardwood stock, long range barrel model 12 but that's not listed on their page.

12BVSS is the code for laminate but it's in stainless steel. It's the same gun action. B for laminate V for long range barrel, SS=stainless steel http://www.savagearms.com/12bvss.htm

You may call and see if you can special order a piece together gun. They may offer it in non stainless but it's not listed on their website. Based on the way they do their model numbers they should be able to do that reasonably.

Thanks for all your suggestions guys. I plan on contacting Savage to see if they do customized assemblies, and if not will call Boyd's. For the moment, the Savage purchase is on the back-burner, as I just got word from my dad that he's going to transfer ownership of one of his rifles to me...I believe it's a Kimber HS .22, which seems to be an equally good rifle to start out with.

Gotta keep saving for the Savage though, after seeing all the pics posted here of the decked-out, modified, reach-out Savages:D

First after-market stock I tried on my 10FP was the Ultimate Varminter. Sturdy and well-built, it behaved almost like a rail gun with the little recoil that .223 generates. Unfortunately, I couldn't stand the Dragunov-style stock and the overly thick grip, so I got rid of it.

Now I'm back to the more traditional Duramaxx stock. It's still an improvement over the factory tupperware, but don't expect dramatic results.

Detritus:

Thanks for the link! I like the extended bolt handles they offer; now if they could just offer a cocking piece complete with safety............
Having been a Mod. 70 fan for more years than I care to admit, that was the only complaint I had on the Savage. No matter how many times I tried to release the safety on end of bolt, it still was not there on the Savages.:uhoh: Having used the Savage(s) for a few years, have finally become accustomed to the wayward safety location.:)
