I bought a nice model 64 today. :D The previous owner buggered the side plate screws a little and I want to replace them. The action checks out and I don't think he modified the gun. Probably got carried away cleaning.

Does anyone know the part numbers for the screw that holds in the yoke and the side plate screws as well as the part numbers for the proper size bits? I also want to get a few strain screws just in case.

Thanks in advance.

I don't have the book in front of me but a late enough model 64 would have the spring-loaded gizmo yoke retainer screw wouldn't it?

Which makes me wonder if one could retrofit the spring-loaded whiz-bang yoke retainer thingus into an older model without fitting or, if not, if fitting the rigid yoke retainer screw would be all that tricky? It'd just be filing it 'till the cylinder opens without making a noise like unlined brakes?

Anyhow, that's the Brownell's bit set I bought. I think it duplicated what I already had in the Magnatip box but better safe than sorry.

Yes, fitting it is no big thing.

It just needs to be filed to correct length so it doesn't bottom out on the yoke when it is tightened.

And possibly turned or filed down slightly so it bears just a frog-hair on the yoke cut to allow it to open/close without any front-back slop.

I have no idea whether the now style will fit an older gun.

Or any idea which dash-model this gun is.

The gun is a 64-5. Brownells doesn't list the yoke retainer screw for some of the models.

Well, to add to my confusion, the downloadable S&W parts PDF shows a part 33A identified as a "yoke screw", "endshake screw", "Yoke screw assy (obsolete)" and "Yoke screw assy SGB", with the last two items tagged with the "-4" revision note.

Numrich is calling it an "assembly" but seems to be picturing a screw here.

The OP has a "dash-5" so I'd bet no more than a day-old donut that he needs the spring loaded gizmo. If not, and he buys it anyway, he can report back as to whether it can be retrofitted.
;)

...or call S&W - they've been a helpful lot when I called.

The above suggestions are good but I would contact S&W directly. They even send them free sometimes but not always. In any case you can easily get the correct screws from S&W.

Curses!

The 4 in 1 combo driver I bought has a bit for everything except the dang yoke screw! Does anyone know which specific bit fits? I browsed through Brownells but could not divine the correct one to order.

In other news the Yoke Screw assembly I ordered that Brownells listed for the 64-4 has the fancy spring in it. I assume the -5 will also use the same assembly.
