Rescuing a beat up old shotgun

Before acquiring that shotgun, I would be quadruply sure that no portion of that barrel was less than 18 inches from the bolt face (if it is cut at an slight angle). Most barrels are cut a bit longer than 18 just to be sure that the BATFE inspectors have no reason to haul you off to jail.

I would have a piece of dowel rod marked at 18 inches, inserted down the muzzle until it contacts the bolt, and if I could see any part of the marking on the rod, at any location on the barrel, that barrel would be destroyed.

If the barrel was cut square and long enough to pass legal requirements, I would consider getting a parkerizing kit that can be done at home, to finish the steel components. The aluminum parts would get a flat black coating of a good, gun-grade product.

I had a glossy slug barrel on matte finish 870. I just sanded it (the barrel) enough to rough it up and hit it with some Rustoleum satin black. Looks like it belongs there now.
