hi all! I'm a new yorker who's looking to move to florida (st pete). I was wondering whether i need a valid fl drivers license to purchase a handgun? would a rent agreement work? my word?

This might seem like a weird question, but in NY you cant even look at a pistol in a store without a permit, hence the wonderment

In a private sale, a Florida DL is about the only way you can establish residency, unless you find a lenient seller.

A DL would also satisfy a dealer requirement if you don't want to pass through hoops trying to prove residency.

I'm sure someone on here can cite the law chapter and verse, but in a FTF sale the seller doesn't have to dot the I's and cross the T's as an FFL must, as I understand it. He can accept your word on residence. Think about it, how does he determine you're not a felon?

I'm not gonna be moving until 1/12, and fortunately, the condo is owned by my mother so I should have no problem getting everything together so that i can get the fl driver license around the same time I do get down there.

It was simply something i was curious about, i appreciate the input, and i cant wait to get outta NY as soon as i finish my associates!!
