That price of .223, right?
Well, have no fear, .22LR is here!

Honestly im not exactly fan of AR-15 platform - i recognize it as great military design, but personally? Meh, just give me long modern handguard on vz. 58 and i will be happy.

Yet, its for sure platform which is good to know.

Thats why i decided to get some AR/PCC style rifle to make use of nearby pistol calibre combat/tactical shooting range. Since i want to shoot a lot and without regrets of how many my savings i just burned, i went for .22.
Dont get me wrong - i would prefer .308 but its kinda pointless to have another rifle where i have to count every shot in regards of my wallet and be limited with options where to shoot.

And since i dont like "toy" guns i went for proper training gun - Tippmann M4-22 Pro

Inspired by that Thumb guy - lets start from the tipp and continue to the butt(stock)

Muzzle device is classic A2 bird cage with bottom ports - i guess it doesnt really matterr on .22LR. Since it sits on 1/2"x28 thread, you can change it for whatever you wish, even suppressor

Barrel is phosphated steel (4150) 12,5" with 1:16 twist rate. Tippmanns offer models with diffrent lenght but this one was perfect for me because i wanted "CQB fun" and at least some recoil - which kinda worked

Handguard... hm, little bit short for my taste, but just because the looks. Its sturdy with some rougher texture - it feels good in hand and works well. I like it.

There are folding sights on top of rail and good ones! I didnt expect much, but its some MBUS variant/copy. Quite sturdy, closer look will reveal some rough edges and manufacturing marks, suggesting lower price range. Yet it feels liike you can count on tham.

Upper is alluminium and solid with working forward assist. Not sure what more to say about it, since its just what it should be - AR upper.
Lower is same story - aluminium AR15. You can also use every AR15 pistol grip.
Yeah, its .22 LR and you cant swap it with bigger calibre, but for purpose of training its just AR15 lowe and upper.

Guts are ofcourse diffrent but still close to AR as possible so when you are cleaning it some little bit odd bolt will pop up and charging handle is shorter, yet the proces is almost same (at least to my knowledge since i dont own other AR)

Photos taken while cleanning after first 200ish rounds
Buffer tube is mil-spec and housing acctuall buffer and on the end is wobly M4 stock - it have nice texture on end and woblines isnt issue on .22LR but... its wobly stock, it stinks

Magazines are little bit odd and longer than AR15 while holding "just" 25 rounds but feels great in hand - cant really say why, but they do. They look like AR15 ones and with some force on proper buttons it will reveal its inside with loading tab. Thats not really necessary if you are goind to load just one mag, but you will like that feature while loading ...load of mags.

Thanks to my curious frined I acan even tell you that loaded mag weight 305 g
Overal fit and finish is nice and little bit over its price range - at least for local (Czech) market. Except stock there isnt single which would stink.
Undloaded and without red dot it weights 2.2 Kg (acording to specs), but its nicely ballanced (i would say thats more accident than purpose) so it doesnt feel too light

And what about trigger? Why i didnt mention that?
Well, because its part of how it shoots and behave

It shoots great, trigger dont drag you down but its in overall meh and you will feel long reset while rapid firing

And you will rapid fire a lot

First run was on mentioned tactical shooting range and with my sceptical friend (armed with Scorpion EVO 3 and P-10C)

I opened fire like seconds after what we put our ear protection on.
But that was with my Beretta APX so i guess that doesnt count.

Moments later i went for first shots with M4-22 and it was and after that stopped just to load more mags or change obsacles and targets.

First of all its just awesome and liberating to shoot for third of price of 9mm. Not exactly point for those who have mountains of ammo in basement (and under bed, behind cupboard, next to umbrela stand and so...), but i bought that gun mostly because that.
.22LR doesnt produce much recoil but some feedback is present and if you use CCI Stinger it magnifies to noticebla (funny .22LR) level

Few times my finger was just faster that trigger reset - honestly cant say if its guns flaw or me forcing it fire rate of machine gun

Reliability was great, i would say - we have two malfunctions when round bend while chambering, but thats common .22LR problem and most of time its because inproper mag loading. So i hesitate to blame gun. Nothing more in about 200 rounds (my favorite S&B HV HP, then for try CCI Stinger, Harnady Varmit and S&B Club)

My biggest issue with gun is that trigger can be pulled even when its out of battery - not exactly sure if it can even fire, but when i use flag in chamber while its cocked i can pull trigger and hear it going off. There arent some conclusive firing pin marks on flag so i dont know if its actually capable to fire round + it should be issue for .22LR, yet.. i would rather it to not do that.

In result - i like this gun, its fun, its proper training tool, its usable as PCC if you are into with this calibre and it serves its purpose. For its price its great deal

This version comes with one 10 round magazine (reinforced steel lips), gun lock, chamber flag and in paper box

Didnt know Tippmann was making firearms again... Always liked their paintball markers. And his 22LR versions of heavy machine guns

12.5 barrel with an A1 birdcage is well under 16", making this a short barreled rifle. Did you have to fill out SBR paperwork?

Same here - some time ago i had Hammerli Tac 1 in .22LR, good rifle but bolt catch and forward assist was just for looks and it actually annoy me to the point i sold it + 16" barrel reduced recoil completly
