Looking to have a Ruger Alaskan 2.5” 454 ported. Besides Mag-na-port International, know of any reputable companies that do it?

I had my 640 .357 MagNa-Ported because shooting a qualification course with the load you're going to carry was brutal. Now it shoots like a steel J frame with +p 38s.

Because I'm in-law enforcement I got a discount and it was well worth the modification.

I have had two S&W's that were Mag Na Ported. A 4" Model 29 that I had done back in the early 80's, and a Lipseys 696 that came ported.

I regretted having the 29 done, as I saw no discernable difference in muzzle rise once it was done, and the big flaming "V" was a distraction in low light and just fouled the front sight in short order. Same thing with the 696, but I got a good deal on it. I wish it wasnt, but it is what it is.

If youre going to be shooting lead, expect this after a couple of cylinders and to be constantly trying to wipe the lead and powder fouling off the sight as you shoot. And the lead is a bitch to get off when youre cleaning too.

While the fouling is an annoyance, rcmodel's quote in Blue Bricks post is a very real and valid reason NOT to have it done.

I’m one who doesn’t notice much additional noise from a ported revolver over a non ported revolver. Short barreled guns are loud anyway, plus both ported and non will have a B/C gap that vents gasses 360 degrees just a few feet in front of your face.

These are non ported .357’s, a Model 66 and a 686+:

And this is a ported 629 Powerport like @Tallball has. (Not a huge amount of stuff venting from the port in this pic.)

There is a reduction in muzzle rise with a ported magnum handgun do the gun will get back where you want it for follow up shots a bit faster. (For a fishing-companion gun out in grizzlyville, that’s not bad!) But I don’t feel tooooo much of a reduction in felt recoil from a magnum handgun, they still snap backwards pretty quickly.

Ports alongside the sight, like a Mag-na-ported short-barreled .454 will have, will filthy the sight up in very short order. So, a colored or hi-viz sight will be sooty gray after a few shots.

(For those who may not be familiar, the S&W factory made PowerPort is located in front of the sight, which is a Patridge blade, so getting sooty is not an issue as the sight picture remains the same.)

If I was going to port a gun like your short .454, Mag-na-port is where I would go.

Stay safe.

Wow, that is done up.

There are ports in the traditional two-port Mag-na-port location, on either side of the sight. :)

There are a bunch of holes in the barrel shroud though. IMHO it sort of looks like a cheese grater, so I’ll respectfully pass on that version.

Stay safe..

A guy here had his .44 Magnaported and a red ramp insert installed.
It did not take a lot of shooting for the port smoke to black out the insert.

He was kind of wacky anyhow.
A big Ruger man, he loaded his .44 Magnum down and his .45 LC up.

Notice Mag-na-port International has not updated their web site since 2019; anyone on here use them lately, because I have a Ruger Bisley I would like to get ported.

I'd rather have a sister in a whorehouse than a ported sixgun. Porting does not reduce recoil, it redirects it. You get less muzzle rise but more thrust back into your palm. Along with increased flash, blast and dirty front sights.

What was the manufacturer and model of the revolver you had problems with after you had it ported?

I had a 4.2” model 69 with no ports and a Taurus tracker 4” with the factory ports and there is no comparison. The model 69 was downright unpleasant to shoot with full house magnums and the Taurus is a pussycat. The model 69 went down the road. I’ve also shot contenders with and without porting and muzzle brakes on the same frame with the same grips and Graig’s observation don’t match with mine.

And i have a 69 2.75" that all I had to do was change the grip to make it into a pussycat. My 460XVR had less recoil than my Mountain Revolver too.

Never did, never would.

What your saying is, You have no personal experience with a Revolver that has been ported, so you really don't know how the Revolver I want to port would function.

But you comment anyway, very strange.
