my coworker's father has an S&W snub 38 special w/ a hammer that is almost flush with the back of the gun. from the side view it almost looks hammerless but is surprisingly easy to cock. is that a model or a type of hammer job? i wish i had a picture of it to describe it better.

If the rear of the frame is rounded the revolver may be an Smith and Wesson M-38 which has a concealed hammer. If its' not an M-38 it sounds as if someone has bobbed the hammer on a standard revolver.

I think it's a standard model that was called a bodyguard.

Shrouded hammer might be the term you were thinking of. I think the m49 was the first one I saw for sale. Certainly could have been others with that shape prior to the m49 that I'm not aware of.

There are basically two models of the bodyguard (not the new piece which is not a "real" bodyguard).
The Model 38 (638/438) which is alloy framed and the 49 (649) that is steel frame. Most come in ~2" barrels. 6xx's have a stainless cylinder and barrel, 38,49 & 438 have blue steel. the 38 and 49 could also be had in nickel.

I have both a Model 649 (all stainless steel construction), and a Model 638 (aluminum alloy frame and stainless steel barrel and cylinder). Both guns are great snubbies: the Model 649 has less felt recoil due to its slightly heavier weight while the Model 638 is more comfortable to carry because of its lighter weight.
