There have been some threads here (with great pictures) dealing with polishing stainless steel revolvers with Mother's polish and the results are incredible. The polish actually smooths the surface on a physical level. Something would have to rough it up again - physically - for it to dull again.
I don't carry this .44 magnum daily but I shoot it often. Did the Mother's thing several years ago and it still looks the same. It cleans up well now with a small amount of Flitz.
Stainless isn't like regular steel or brass. It'll stay shiney as mentioned and it's up to you to handle it so that it doesn't pick up scuffs and scratches along the way. Regular holster use will dull the spots that rub the holster if the inside of the holster isn't kept obsessively clean of grit that embeddes in the leather. Similarly at the range you'll want to lay the gun down on a known clean pad or shop rag to avoid sliding on a hard surface or even old carpet that will likely have grit on or in it. Stainless steel is actually a relatively soft metal so while this is good because it's easier to polish to this sort of shine it's bad because you can scuff or scratch it more easily from contact with things that are abrasive.
