Revolvers are Old Fashioned

I think the popularity of revolvers vs semis is generational due to pop culture.

Guys in their late 50s and on up grew up on TV westerns or some of the great spaghettis. Cowboys and lawmen of the west were the heroes to emulate as much as guys my age looked to Rambo or John McClain or guys in their 20s and younger following modern firearm trends due to basically growing up watching live war on TV the last decade and a half.

I might not be too into the whole "operator" gun culture...but I'm also not into the hunting scene at all either. As long as people are being safe and having a good time, I'm cool with that. My favorite kind of gun is all of 'em.:)

I don't think the revolver is going away anytime soon. They will probably always take a backseat to semis as long as semis offer a higher capacity at a generally more affordable price.

However, I don't think I will ever be without a wheelgun. More often than not, I carry an LCR or SP101. I shoot them well, and they inspire confidence in a very packable package.

I do enjoy my Glock. If society came crashing down, I would be foolish to ignore the reliability of the Glock or the 92fs as well as increased capacity...but that's a far flung and silly mental exercise, honestly.

Truth be told I will be far more likely to get sick of the hustle and bustle and go spend a week in a cabin in the wilds. I can tell you that my go to firearm would be a robust SA. Hot coffee on a brisk early morning with the comforting heft of a six gun strapped on my belt watching the sun wake up the world...sounds pretty much perfect.

I'm 35 years old, and I think my revolvers outnumber my semis 2:1. Even now, I've been looking at getting a new blackhawk in .45 just because I've got an itch that a Glock just can't scratch.

Revolvers are outdated, old fashioned, and I adore them so very much.

Folks - let's stay focused on congratulating Jonesy on their collection and for joining the madness. Let's not turn this into yet another "revolver vs semi-auto" discussion. The latter is off-topic, and there are already too many of those threads to boot.

I live in an open carry state, but typically dont like to advertise I am carrying so when it is warm out I carry a small semi. but winter is coming and it may be time to break out some of the bigger boys. I have a few semi's, but have more than a few revolvers starting with the 1851 Navy and ending with the current lcrx.

One thing that will keep revolvers alive is exposure. I thought they were old fashioned until being exposed to them so that I could see the craftsmanship and then fire one to experience the balance and shootability. My 16 year old nephew is all into the shooter type video games with all the cool weapons, but when I take him to the range he wants to shoot one of my 357 magnums. The 357 magnum is what really got me hooked on wheelguns. Seeing that big old fireball and feeling that recoil in my palm is an adrenalin rush and something even the tacticool generation can appreciate if exposed to it.

I agree it is a generational preference. Growing up in the 1950s and 1960s, revolvers were what we saw and used until military service. I had a civilian job which included a Model 10. I have always preferred revolvers. Younger people today have grown up with autoloaders and that is what they know. That is what they prefer.

Sure revolvers are old fashion... So are knives. They both will get the job done if you are skilled with 'em.

Hey Jonesy, yeah revolvers are old fashioned but then again so am I! Anyways you've got a great collection of wheelguns going on there and I'm not just saying that because I have three of the same guns as you do (Model 638, M&P pre-Model 10, and a Model 686).

I like hand guns of any kind. Both of my Grand Dads carried 6 guns everyday. They were just Back Country cow men. My thrill was when we would stop picket the horses and shoot a few rounds at a rock.
I like my S&W collection of revolvers. I like my WWII collection of Lugers and C 96 Mausers and Black Powder revolvers. Which is the best? Semi Auto or revolvers? Humm? It just depends on my mood and what reloads are ready to shoot. :D

Revolvers are old fashioned. So are manners, patriotism, grit and rugged individualism. Nice pieces!

Nice post Orcon- agree with all of the above, plus I'll add my flip phone to that list.....

Started off with semi-autos and believe it or not the wife converted me to revolvers. Loving every minute of it.

Old school? You only have them new-dangled, double action, quick reload, swing cylinder rigs. Take a step back to a swing gate cartridge gun or even better still a step back to where ya don't even use them stinkin cartridges and try percussion guns. Then you can talk about old school.

What do I know though...I'm just a 31 year old with a safe containing exactly 3 semiauto handguns...a few more than that with the wheelguns.

I've noticed a lot of young people with 642s these days. The pendulum is swinging... they are becoming tactic-cool. If I was a LEO I'd almost certainly carry a Glock; it's suited to the task. My needs? A revolver suits them just fine. Plus they are neat-o.

At one time I had a S&W Model 686, a Colt Trooper Mk.V, and a Ruger GP100. Could only keep one due to financial situation. The Ruger was the first to go; didn't care for the way the gun handled and the trigger was the worst of the three. Tougher choice between the S&W and Colt; both had great ergonomics but the S&W won out with the best trigger (out of the box it was the best trigger I have ever encountered on a revolver).

Wow! I got so excited reading these revolver post today. I dug out an old S&W Mdl. 36 1 7/8" 4 screw flat latch .38 Special. We were inseparable during my years working for Government contractors so long ago. The old Smith and the old man had a nice Range day. :)

Okay, I admit I carry an automatic -- a full size M1911. And I have a couple of .22 automatics I really like, a Colt Woodsman made in 1938 and a Ruger MKII with a heavy Clark barrel, target sights and a trigger job.

But beyond that, I love revolvers. I carried a revolver my first tour in Viet Nam, a Colt M357, and served two customers. I love the Colt SAA (mine is a second generation in .357) and I REALLY love my Colt New Service .45 Colt. I trimmed the barrel back to 5 1/2" on this gun, added adjustable sights and Herrett Shooting Master grips. There is no better gun anywhere, and I stand ready to prove it on the body of him who says different!

Thanks for the tip, bannockburn. I will save my pennies for a few more weeks then and go for the Smith

I have a friend that I shoot with all the time. He has a GP 100 and I have the 686. He wishes he hadn't cheaped out and had got a 686. The trigger on his GP isn't bad as far as weight of pull, but it has a longer travel distance.

I remember when I first saw one of them things. I thought, "The bullet and powder and primer are all loaded into one piece of brass? That is a crazy idea that will never catch on!" But I had a few greenbacks on me and indulged myself. It still shoots pretty fair.

The other day I seen some young feller shootin' one, and he didn't even cock the hammer. He just pulled the trigger and it done it itself! What will they think of next?

Vern Hump, I enjoyed your post very much. I do not want to discuss history. That said, I understand very well your comments. Thanks.:)

Revolvers will forever and always have an application where they surpass the bottom feeders, as such, they'll always be sustained. Hunting will forever and always be a revolver game.
