Revolvers, Retirement, Freedom...

My day of retirement was April 1st, 1916. I haven't had one moment of regret.
:rofl::rofl::rofl:
I figured you were old, but man! 107 years!
I figure the important date in that April 1st, 1916 statement was "April 1st." ;)
Besides, he said his "day of retirement" was April 1st, 1916. That would make doubleh somewhere around 170 years old unless he "retired early" - like on the day he was born! 😀

I clicked "Like" on your comments, not because of your situation, but because you are honoring your marriage by taking care of her. I hope the best for you both. Hang in there, Pard.
Same here, good on you @thunderbyrd for being there for her. That makes you a true hero in my eyes, far too many spouses give up.

I retired at 56 in January. I spent 31.5 years in the game, and for the first 15.5 I made it to supervisor (sergeant) at two different agencies. I spent 16 to the day at my last one, where I held every rank but Chief in my time there.

Now I take the kids to swim meets, dance class, motorcycle races and keep the house and yard up. I shoot 2-3 times a week and started coaching the AFJROTC marksmanship team to give back a bit, though I have stopped umpiring little league since my son went off to college.

I am happy where I am and have turned aside at least three job offers since walking out the door. @J-Bar, I hope that you have a long and happy retirement, you have earned it. :D

Stay safe.

i am glad that my wife and I are retired, but our retirement has become a "one day at a time" proposition. my wife lost her right leg below the knee 3 years ago and has since developed dementia. so now i have to try to stay on top of her medications and everything else. many days when she gets up in the morning, i have to hear about the people who had a party in the basement over night, and other stuff like that. she still has a sense of humor and as long as that lasts, we can get by. but, i must tell ya, i ain't much of a cook.

i had a part-time job that i really enjoyed, and that gave me extra money for toys, but i had to let that go because i couldn't leave her alone for 8 hours.

i have a 1911-22 that she used to enjoy shooting at an indoor range but she isn't safe anymore.
That’s a tough situation. Be sure to take care of yourself as you take care of your wife.

Thunderbyrd: Good on you, friend...taking care of her...that's why we're on God's green earth...All the best to her and you.

As to your comment about being less than a gourmet chef...when my wife shattered her knee cap a year and a half ago, (bed-ridden for almost 3 months) I'd was worried we'd both die of scurvy in the first three weeks....but I learned, cheerios, tuna sandwiches & spaghetti cover three of the main food groups....though the laundry will never be the same!
You're in my prayers, Rod

Dam, I need to do a better job of proof reading. Make that 1996. Sorry for the fumble fingers.

Fixed it.

My official retirement date was on April Fool's Day.
That’s funny! 😆

I submitted my retirement docs and my formal written retirement declaration on April 1st. I don’t think anyone that I reported to or worked with realized it nor did they get the July 4th retirement date…Independence Day.

All the guys that reported to me figured it out with ease. They got a kick out of it.

I hope to retire soon, I was targeting next April 1 also. Hadn't thought about the correlation of April fools though.
I'm still on the fence about it though. I actually like my job, most of the time. There are days that I wish I was retired but that's normal for everyone.

I like being challenged and I like doing electrical and electronic diagnostics, keeps me sharp. Mechanics fill out the rest of the 12 hour day.
But I'm getting tired so I may retire anyways and just wait until I can draw full benefits.

I'll be 65 in Dec and I need to be 66.6 to get full benefits.

(I want my wife to get my benefits if she outlives me, because mine are a lot higher than hers.) That's my plan. She's earned it for putting up with me for 44 years.
One day I'll make the decision.
But good for all of you who retired. I hope to join you some day in the immediate future.

My agency wanted large cutbacks without having the image of layoffs, so they made up a generous early retirement plan. I did the arithmetic and ran. The first few years I took some temporary jobs, but nothing in a long time. And I am not one of those people who hangs around the old place drinking coffee with those still employed.

Yeah, that was me. I joke about going to college after I retired as an electrician. But the truth is, the company that I'd worked for, for 27 years "bought me out." That is, they offered me (and 24 other senior employees) a lump sum of money to just leave. That way it didn't look like a layoff, and 25 of the more junior employees (with young families) got to keep their jobs - for a while anyway.
So, I grabbed the money, paid off our house, and went back to school. I was a freshman at Idaho State University the same year our youngest daughter was a graduating senior there, and I actually got a better grade in Philosophy than she had gotten in Philosophy (from the same teacher) 3 years prior. :D
Just to keep this gun related though, when I was in college, I couldn't legally carry on campus even though I had a valid Idaho CCW license. That's why I ended up hot footing it back across the quad a few times - because I didn't want to be late for class and I'd forgotten to lock my gun in the truck.
That's all changed now. Nowadays, with an Idaho Enhanced CCW License (which I now have) I can legally carry on-campus at ISU. And I do sometimes - my wife, both of our daughters and I are all ISU alumni now, so my wife (who also has an Idaho Enhanced CCW License) and I end up on campus there every once in a while.:)
Edited to add: I've had a college degree since 2004, and earlier this week, I noticed that my degree and $3.00 (plus tax) will get me a cup of coffee at IHOP. ;)

Everyone is different. Guys who retire and have nothing to do or to keep interested in tend to be miserable and die soon.

I retired a bit more than a year ago due to health issues. I'm healthy now and enjoying every day. I keep busy and have lots of interests. Intend to go to the range again next week and shoot some more revolvers. :)
