RHKP-marked Remington Wingmaster riot gun

Just picked up a Remington Wingmaster riot gun with the older "corn cob" forend. Interstingly, it`s marked "RHKP" both on the stock and receiver. I know there were a bunch of surplus Royal Hong Kong Police S&W Model 10s, but have never seen a surplus shotgun from that agency. Looks like a neat piece of martial history. Any one else seen one of these or know who imported them?

Where exactly did you find this unique shottie?

Just found it on an online auction site. Looks exactly like a standard 18.5"-barrel Remington 870 Wingmaster riot gun, only stamped "RHKP 5825" on the stock and the receiver. I`ve not seen the gun in person yet, but the seller says it has no import marks (that he found). A little more digging told me that the RHKP did (and may still) use the 870, but I`d love to know if anyone else has seen another one of these. The serial number is 403XXXv.

Edited to add: just called Remington and they tell me the gun was made in 1955

Not trying to be too bump crazy, but here are three of the seller's pictures of this shotgun:

Internet searches have turned up nothing on the importation of these shotguns.

Good that you called and got a 'born on' date. Did they tell you anything else about it when you called? That was about the time Remington sold a batch of 870R Riot guns to the British Security Forces in Malaya. How long is the barrel on yours? The Riot guns came with 20" barrels and the old Wngmaster marked Police guns had 18" barrels.

Interesting find...

The fellow I spoke to said it was too old for their records to indicate who the gun was originally sold to. Kind of sucks, as they were kind enough to tell me my other Remington shotgun was originally issued to the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

The seller says the thing has an 18.5" barrel, but I haven't got my hands on it yet to measure it myself.

Interesting. I know those folks used a lot of Browning Auto-5s during the unpleasantness down there as well. Wouldn't be surprised if some of those shotguns wound up in the inventory of a nearby colonial holding such as HK. You're right about me using the terms "Police" and "Riot" loosely, though. I am not that well versed in Remington shotguns.

I LOVE that aluminum face surgery butt plate. Ooohh Rah!

Heh, heh, heh. Just in case you need a reminder that you just fired some high-base loads through it.

Uh, Uh , No. For use when less than lead encouragement is called for or you run out of ammo. A man trained in the vertical then the horizontal butt stroke would really have a hey day with them little Hong Kong rascals!

Quick update. Just got the shotgun in my hands. Slight patina and very dirty. Locks up tight. Appears ready for another half century of use.

Turns out to have a third "RKHP" marked in large letters below the ejection port. No import or proof marks. The barrel is stamped "CYL" in large block letters. Next to that is a "FULL" that has been peened out and "PBY" stamped immediately below in a small serif-type font. Both "PBY" and "CYL" are not in the white, indicating the barrel had been reblued.

Barrel length is 18.5", but there is no bead. This leads me to believe that this barrel was cut down from 20"--possibly by someone (an armorer?) with the initials PBY. Whoever did the cutting did it well--the muzzle has been faced and blued.

If this thing could talk!

If only it could...

Out of curiosity, what's the LOP? I was wondering if they shortened it at the rear, too.

Funny you should mention that. It did look chopped as well. The distance between the center of the trigger and the end of the stock is 13 1/4". Nice, compact gun.
