I have acquired a 1967 Remington 760 game master it is a 270. The end of the barrel was filled with dry dirt the first 4 inches of the barrel. After cleaning the bore It is beautiful except the last 3 inches has pitting where the dirt was(for years) it doesn’t appear that deep but quite a bit of it. Is this dangerous to shoot or does this only affect accuracy?

Not dangerous and may not affect accuracy, don’t know till you shoot it. Give it a scrubbing with a brass brush and Kroil, then see about accuracy. If all over the paper, consider counterboring to get back to good rifling.

What I see in your pictures is nothing compared to some of the old war horses that I own. I have a pair of Turkish Mausers which I paid $50 for the pair with the thought I would like to try my hand at re-barreling some day. Both have considerably worse bores than yours and both shoot pretty darned well. Neither of them are MOA but a Winchester pump action isn't an MOA target gun anyway. I have my fathers 760 in 30-06 in pristine condition and it will easily stay in a 2" circle at 100 yards which is more than I need for a deer gun. The old Turks will do just about as good.

Frankly my MOA target rifles are only MOA from a bench. I can't reliably keep any rifle under 1" at 100 yards when shooting from my shoulder no matter how accurate the gun is. I can come close... definitely close enough to harvest game at 100 yards. But MOA accuracy is a waste on me in a hunting rifle.

Shoot it! See how well it does, then take it hunting once you are comfortable with it!

What about pitting in the receiver ? I just fired it for the first time and it jammed but fired. It doesn’t look like the pic now it’s cleaned up but the pitting of course is still there. This is a pic when I first received the rifle

The pump action Remmington rifles can be short stroked just like a pump action shot gun... been there, done that.... probably not the problem you are having.

How are the internals? Is the bolt clean or pitted? Is the bolt groove in the barrel clean or pitted. The receiver looks like some pretty bad cosmetic issues. If the internals are pitted as bad I would probably give up on it. If the internals are just a little rough I would load them up with Flitz and start racking the action.

Small rust on inside of chamber area I’ve did the 0000 and oil. No pitting on inside of receiver just bad on the outside. And pitting on tip of inside of bore here’s some pics of it after I’ve scrubbed and a look inside

If it were a 742 semi auto I would sell it for parts. Since it is a 760 pump I would plan to have the receiver re-blued when time allowed and, if that barrel doesn't shoot well enough, look for a good used barrel on one of the auction sites.

Which part about it would be make you want to part it? My issue is some say no big deal mines 10x worse it’s the best gun I’ve ever had others tell me it’s not safe. Idk what to think honestly. As long as it’s not dangerous I can live with cosmetics and small flaws. Do you think it’s dangerous and do you have a auction site name? I can’t find a barrel anywhere for this gun.

And, you most likely won't. It's not like a Remington 870 whereby you can switch barrels easily. The Remington 760 was offered in the rifle barrel length of 22-inch and then the carbine length of 18-inch. Minimum legal length that I would do would be 16½ inch. So, if the rifling is good three inches back from the pitting, cutting, resetting the front sight, if you want to, and then crowning might be a consideration where you would then have good rifling at the muzzle and still be within legal barrel length.

Yeah the bore is crystal up to the last 3 inches where dirt was packed in it probably for couple years

No it will not be dangerous to shoot.

Next logical step, after a standard bore cleaning, is to shoot it in order to determine the accuracy of the piece. That step may also result in that bad stretch of bore looking surprisingly better afterwards. ;)

Good luck & Welcome to THR, Thehunta! :)

Thank you sir I’ve never seen a firearm so neglected so new experience for me but enjoying learning and restoring. Quarantine fun
