Rifle Cartridge You Love for No Real Reason

7.62x54r because it's been inexpensive so far for me, first rifle I hunted with and now I'm just attached at the hip.

220swift (don't have and have never shot but I love it all the same).

It’s been a few years. But the first big hog was about 75(?) yards up hill. The second was about 50 yards at a dead sprint. Sounded like I’d hit both of them with a baseball bat. How I heard that I’ll never know.

50 yards at a sprint from a big hog is a good shot. People don’t realize how fast they can move, faster than Usain Bolt, the fastest man alive

They are crazy fast. And not much can stop them once they get moving. Swung through her like I was shooting teal with a tad less lead. It was like those guys over in Europe hunting them in drives. But I’m NOWHERE NEAR as good a shot as they are. And I’ll never pretend I am. I got lucky.
 
.280ai. Don’t have a rifle in it yet. Just seems like the perfect NA big game round to me. For just a little more recoil than .30-06 it’ll throw an aerodynamic, high SD bullet out to magnum distances with enough bullet weight for elk on down.

Already bought the dies, brass and bullets. Now just have to find/build the rifle.

I did get a few ducks this winter but not as many as I would like!

You and me both. It's becoming more and more versatile with some casting in the future paired with a suppressor. It has a definite thump on both ends, feels like a 308Win.

Would love to take an elk with one, at a manageable distance under 100 yards, with a good performing bullet.

I've got a suitable suppressor in jail right now and am debating either a 450 or a 45-70

It depends on the platform of the rifle you desire.

If lever action, 45-70 is easy to find and the new Marlin's coming out of Ruger have a threaded barrel.

Personally, I like the 450 Bushmaster better just simply due to the fact it provides near 45-70 performance within it's bullet weights. And for suppression it's case volume is much better to work with in my opinion. Maker's Rex, Leheigh Defense make some great subsonic expanding bullets that have performed on game, I'm in the process of trying some out. I really need to order some casting molds of some 425gr+ molds to start casting some subsonic plinking loads to mimic my expensive Makers' bullets.

If you can find a Ruger GSR in 450 Bushmaster, they are hard to find these days; the are a good option for an upgrade over the Ruger American which in itself has a very good reputation. I like the Ruger MKII action with CRF, 3 position safety and provides good AISC magazine options. The CRF of the GSR is a great feature for feeding the varied bullet profiles that might get hung up on a standard push-feed action.

Not really. If a round doesn't perform well for a specific application, I generally just won't let it into my life, especially if I have something that already works well. I was gifted a Winchester 94 a few months back (early 70's vintage). I have no special feelings for either the caliber or the rifle, and I'm not really fond of lever guns in general, but I did buy some ammo, put a Williams adjustable rear sight on it, zeroed it, and shot a deer with it this season. Then I cleaned the rifle and put it back in the gun cabinet. I don't have any plans to get rid of it, but I'm indifferent about using it in the future too. Its just kind of "there".
 
I got caught up in the .416 craze back in the late '80's/early '90's and ended up with a Ruger "Express" magazine rifle in .416 Rigby. The thing is pretty much useless to me - I long ago gave up on the idea of ever making it to Africa - but I still have a real soft spot for the cartridge.
 
As far as cartridge aesthetics go, I like the looks of :

.35 rem
6.5 Grendel
.257 Weatherby Mag

They just look good to my eye.

While the .219 Donaldson Wasp is a bit odd these days, and kinda cool..........its based off the .30-30 win and I detest rimmed cartridges.
Have never liked them (my dad did and was a .45-70 fan).

Once I go through the .219 ammo I might get the #3 rebarreled to 6.5 Grendel.
 
30-06, think it is the best thing since sliced bread ... own a Remington 760 I inherited in 30-06, but I've still never shot it. never shot one round of 30-06 out of anything. I reload for it and have made dummy rounds, and just the shape of it is fascinating - it looks serious. That and the history is interesting, but I have no real reason to like it more than .308 or 30-30 or any other rifle cartrdige .. no good reason at all really ... just like it.

I had a T/C barrel chambered in 219 Zipper once. You think the DW was cool, the Zipper was way-cool.
 
The rest of your rounds must be Cowboy-powderpuff shootin', .45 Magnum rifle-capable rounds and more, because that's what the .45 LC is capable of. Ironically, in the one gun I have that can chamber it, a Cobray .45/.410 SxS, it is the most practical round it takes.

.310 Rook would be mine-never owned a gun in that caliber, probably never will, I just like the name.
