I started shooting for the first time in Feb. for fun with single action shooting. I love the rifle and am learning the variety of rifles my husband and I currently have. I would like to eventually compete in rifle competitions. How do you learn about different rifle competitions? I have started looking into the various types of rifle shooting and don’t know where to start? Does anyone have any suggestions?

First read the links here: http://www.nrahq.org/compete/smallbore.asp pertaining to the different types of rifle competition. Specificially look at the Highpower Rifle and Smallbore Rifle links.

Those will be the most common basic types of rifle competition. Clubs and ranges that hold these kinds of matches and where you could meet folks who can provide the proper training are popular all over the country -- probably near you.

Then check out the Civilian Marksmanship Program's page: http://www.odcmp.com/about_us.htm for more info on Highpower shooting than you'll proably ever need! (Plus deals on surplus rifles and ammunition.)

Also, if you want to be a competent rifleman, perhaps the quickest way to develop the skills is by going to an Appleseed shoot. http://www.appleseedinfo.org/ This is one of the neatest things to happen, like EVER. The site is a little heavy on philosophy, but if you go to one of their shoot weekends whenever they're in your area, you'll develop your skills faster/further in two days than in years of plinking on your own.

Good luck!

After the basics from Appleseed, the best thing I know of is CMP Rimfire Sporter. Many common .22 rifles will do adequately and you will shoot slow fire and rapid; prone, sitting, and standing. The logical next step would be NRA Highpower which does the same thing with a bigger more expensive gun and more gear.

While my rifle interests were in the area of NRA Highpower and a bit of smallbore, there is also silhouette (sp?) in centerfire and rimfire versions, blackpower cartridge, and much more. Most states have a state shooting organization (Georgia Sport Shooting Assn), I am certain Texas does as well. This is a good source for club and match info.

And welcome to the forum...

I would vouch that shooting smallbore would help you the most in the long run. Many high power shooters have started shooting smallbore for practice since you need better execution to shoot well in smallbore than in high power. However, smallbore can run you a very pretty penny. If you can find a smallbore match, go and see what they have available for equipment to loan you for the day. They might even have equipment to loan you for a longer term.

Thank you

I would like to thank you all for your advice. I have checked out the various websites including the Appleseed website. I am planning on signing up for the October session. By the way, women shoot free for 2009 at all Appleseed functions. :)
