Need help/advice with competition rifle shooting!!

Im 15, soon to be 16, and I want to start into competition rifle. I was wondering if anyone could help me out. Was wondering if anyone knows of any clubs or organizations near Kansas City, Missouri that I could join. And could anyone tell me how I would get started with competition rifle shooting? thanks.

Take a look at the CMP website odcmp.org.
They list matches in various areas of the country.
Try the NRA site too, look under competitions.

The NRA also has a magazine for competitive shooters called Shooting Sports USA . It lists matches all around the country and the organizers to contact. I found a highpower match in Weldon Springs, MO on July 17, Aug. 27 and Sept. 18. Web contact address is [email protected].

You might check listings in Kansas too.

There are a lot of different types of rifle competition. Some are fired with light .22s, others with heavy target .22 rifles and from standing, kneeling, sitting and prone positions. There are silhouette matches with .22 and centerfire rifles and cowboy silhouette which is shot with lever- actions. If you want to try all of them you are something like I was at your age.

Thanks. I'll look at those sites. My dad gave me his old .22 not too long ago so i've been shooting that at the range..i just enjoy shooting rifles so i figured i would check out some of these rifle competitions and get involved. im up for pretty much any competition.

It might fit in the Light Rifle matches organized by the NRA.

I also might be getting an SKS soon, for a birthday present. Would that be a good rifle for any competitions?

I knew a couple of shooters who used SKS rifles in NRA Highpower.
They put on peep sights and changed the front sights too.
They did OK in local 200 yard matches.

hmm...alright. do you know how much it would cost to change the SKS to make it suitable for the competitions? and do you have a website that i can go to that tells me about the different types of competitions, that explains them and gives me rules and things i need to know?

I would not waste time and money on a communist SKS. Depending on what Dad's .22 is, a new .22 bolt action like a CZ would be a lot better birthday present.

I agree with Jim, trying to convert an SKS to something competition grade would be moreso an effort to prove it could be done rather than an effort to save money.
