Rifle in 270 and/or 30-06

I have both, but I prefer my .270 for personal reasons. The great thing about an 30-06 though, is that .308 offers you an almost endless number of bullet choices, where as .277" doesn't have nearly the number of offerings.
If it were me, I would go with both like I did.

I went with the 270. It is more than enough for anything I will hunt here in FL or even Texas, where I plan on hunting in the future. I have a home in Missouri as well, and there I have a number of rifles to choose from including a 30-06 and 300 Win Mag, if I ever decide to hunt bigger stuff.

Up to now, I've been more of a collector/shooter than hunter. It is good to know that some of the new ammunition is performing well enough that magnum chamberings are not really that necessary anymore, just personal preference.

Slightly off topic, but I think the magnums give many hunters a false sense of security, so they take longer shots than they are capable of, rather than getting closer to the game animal and insuring an ethical kill.

Indeed he does.

I think I'm going to get a Ruger Hawkeye as well. In 30-06 if they have a lefty. I know it probably won't shoot with the Tikka, but it is blue/wood and a really beautiful rifle. I don't think I can resist it.

I sold my Hawkeye after I got the Tikka. Out of the box it shot 3-4" with my best handload(.264 mag). A lot of effort in rifle and load got it under 1" with one load.

I went to the gun store today. They had two left hand Hawkeyes, one in 308 and one in 30-06. I bought both. I know it is way crazy, but i just love the looks of those rifles. I'm hoping that they will shoot better than some of you say yours do. If they are at least 1.5 MOA I will be happy.

If they don't shoot right for you that would be a perfectly good excuse to get a press :D I have yet to come across a modern bolt action that I could not get well below the 1" mark and I have some wicked loads for both 06 and 308.
For factory try Fusion ammo alot of guys have had really good luck with it both on the range and in the field.

I will see how they shoot and may get into the reloading if they don't measure up.

The Hornady rep was in the store when I was there, and I had a really good conversation with him. I like their stuff, and he was telling me about some of their ammo, how it's made and what powders they use. Very interesting.

You made it into the '06 Club before I did, drat it all. FFL called today to say it's in, but I didn't get home from work til way late. At least there's tomorrow!

Congrats on your purchase(s). Let's see some pics, and see how those puppies shoot.

For a long time I resisted the 06 I never had any interest since it was such a boring cartridge, or so I thought. I finally bought one because I needed a donor long action Savage to build my super exciting AI wildcat, well before I tore it down I took it to the range and got hooked, it is still a 30-06 and will probably always remain such.

I know what you mean about resisting the 06. I, too, thought it boring, not sexy like some of the other calibers I have. But listening to you guys, and reading lots of info, I am gaining a new appreciation for this old, very versatile round.

I will post pics as soon as I can.

I am a little late to the discussion, but I thought I'd throw my own 2¢ in. :D

I have rifles in 7mm-08 and 260 Rem, which are dandy, but I want to add the more common calibers to my collection.
Due to reading the works of Jack O'Connor in my earlier years, I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the .270 Win. Its an excellent choice for deer, antelope and caribou in wide open areas of the west and AK. It easily handles game of that size and is a bit flatter shooting than the .30-06 is. On the other hand, if I was more interested in a rifle for bigger game, like elk, moose or bear I would probably lean towards the .30-06 instead. Its arguably a more flexible cartridge, and definitely handles heavier bullets better. Since you already have two lighter guns well suited for deer, etc., in your case I would probably chose the .30-06 instead.

I am left handed, and have narrowed my choices down to the Ruger Hawkeye stainless/laminate, Savage Weather Warrior and Tikka T3 Lite stainless/synthetic.
Personally, my choice would be the Tikka, the Savage and the Ruger, in that order. There is certainly nothing wrong with the Ruger, its a solidly build, quality gun. It just lacks the reputation for accuracy that the other two enjoy.

Which of these would you recommend and which caliber, or both.
There's enough overlap between the .270 and the .30-06 that I would not bother to own both, unless I was just a collector. If I had the .270 and wanted something a bit heavier for larger game, I'd probably go to one of the .30 cal magnums, or perhaps something like the .358 Winchester. If I already had a .30-06 and wanted a lighter, flatter shooting gun I'd be looking at one of the quarter bores (.25-06, .250 Sav, .257 Wby, .257 Rob) or even the .260 Rem you already have.

Indeed he does.

I think I'm going to get a Ruger Hawkeye as well. In 30-06 if they have a lefty. I know it probably won't shoot with the Tikka, but it is blue/wood and a really beautiful rifle. I don't think I can resist it.
My Rugers (2 M77RSIs, 1 in .308 Win and 1 in .270 Win, and a No.1 in 6.5x55 SE) are all shooters and they are rugged.

Good Hunting,

FH

Google 270 and 30.06 the perfect pair!

I have both and love them very much. In 2006 my wife got me a TC encore in 30.06. It was a large step up from a 250 savage I had always used. I wanted 30.06 to have a 100% do it all gun and IMO i got it.

Last yr my dad played a trick on me. He called and asked what caliber he should go with in a new Remington CDL. Since he has forgotten more than I may ever know about Rifles I found it odd but gave him my answer which surprised him. I said 270. Ya see he already had a pair of 6mm and a 25.06. He also has a 30.06 and a 300H&H mag for big long shots. I told him that the 270 was the ticket due to its performance, recoil and ammo price. He didnt listen and went with a 7mm rem which didnt surprise me. couple months later he gave me my first remington as a thank you for my service. Him and a good friend went 50/50 on it presenting it to me at deer camp.

So now I have 2 rifles that can handle pretty much anything. If its long shots at caribou down its probably gonna be my 270. If its elk on up its probably gonna be my .06 with a heavy bullet. In a pinch I feel comfy with either.

I am also torn by a 270 or 30-06 I cant decide on a 150 grain 270 going 2900 fps or a 30-06 150 grain going 2900 fps lol, or weather I like pepsi better then coke

The 270 Tikka has a 22 7/8" barrel. The hawkeye 308 has a 22" gloss blue barrel, and the Hawkeye 30-06 has a 23" matte blue barrel. The catalog lists both barrels as 22". Don't know if it was an oversight or they are all 23" in 30-06. Both of those Rugers are just beautiful. I f they shoot half as good as they look, I'll be ecstatic. They balance perfectly for me. The Savage 260 Predator Max has a 26" fluted semi-weight barrel, with synthetic stock, and it is front-heavy, which is probably OK, because I'll be sandbagging it most of the time. The Browning BAR is another simply beautiful rifle, with it's blue barrel and walnut stock.

I read the Chuck Hawks article, "The Perfect Pair". It was interesting, and the impetus for me to get both guns, even he trashed the Rugers pretty soundly. What does he know.

I also have two Ruger No.1s, one in the Swede, and one international in 7x57. Both of them are good shooters. I popped a canister of Tannerite off-hand at 150 yds., first shot. What a blast, pun intended.

IMO,there is no reason to keep a Tikka and sell a Ruger. I have many Rugers and none ever shot as bad as 3 to 4" out of the box. It isn't cool to own a Ruger but they are pretty and they shoot and as rugid as anything out there.

I'm not selling anything, if that's what you're thinking. I'm buying. Unless you're just making a general statement.

I am not crazy about them but do have a few "wrooga's" in my collection. This Ruger MK II came home with me even though I dont have any use for the 270 Win personally. It's simply the best looking factory stocked Ruger I have ever seen.

CMDC;

I'm sorry I came to this party a little late. I'm also left handed & left master eyed, and have some opinions about the various left hand guns available right now.

I've got a Tikka .30-06 lefty & turned another one into a 6.5 Swede, along with several others. The Tikka's are fine guns, and I'd buy another if the right situation came along. Had a Savage, don't believe I'll have a second one. Once I lived with it awhile, all sorts of little nit-picky things started to bother me & finally enough was enough & it got sold & a CZ took it's place.

Carlos Hathcock won the Wimbledon at Camp Perry with a .30-06. True, it was years ago, but that's still better'n most folks on this site can shoot. Ain't nothin' wrong with an ought-6, it'll do all right for ya.
