Rifle Scope

I'd like to put a scope on my teenagers 10/22 as a gift. I am a shotgunner and a handgunner. I know little about rifles and less about scopes. Can someone recommend what I need in a scope and what brand for a 10/22 to be used for squirrel hunting and range fun?

It's good to make my first post since coming over from TFL!

I have a Weaver 4x fixed power on my 10/22. It has a 1" tube and duplex reticle. I've quite happy with it. I got it from www.swfa.com.

Try CDNN, they have a ton of scopes. If you get a "good" big bore rifle scope, it wont be lost on the 10/22, and can always be used down the road on something else. I'd stay away from the smaller .22 scopes. The scopes on my .22's alawys seem to cost more than the gun.

I'm a scope snob...

but for a kid's starter gun, either a Bushnell or Weaver 4x should be fine

I'd stay way from variable power in the low price range

I used a 4x Bushnell Sportview on my 870 slug gun shooting 3" mags for several years...no problem even with substantial recoil

Yeah, I'd say a Weaver, Burris or similar 4x would be perfect.

If you're coming down around Indy any time soon, I'll give you a brand new in box BSA 2.5x rimfire scope with rings for free if it'll go to good use...

I'd go with a fixed 4x. Either Weaver or Leupold. The Leupold will cost two or three times what the Weaver runs, but has better glass.
Don't be talked into a cheap optic. It's a disservice to you and yoru son. Neither of you will be happy with it. Same goes for rings. You don't need "tactical" rings, a set of Weaver's should do it, but don't get the $5.00 set from China either.
Expect to spend nearly what the rifle cost.

I used one of the Tasco 3X9 30's on my 10/22.

For around $50 its pretty good. However you can pay incredible sums for a scope!

The key to getting this Tasco to work right was to buy a $50 set of Leupold Weaver rings. They are steel and keep the zero intact between shooting range sessions.

Fixed 4X Leupold. They make a one inch tube scope with parrellax set for 22lr ballistics.
