Hey will rifled slugs ruin my smoothbore eventually? Will they perhaps "rifle" the barrel after a long period of time?
Am I just paranoid?

Thx

Paranoid! Just clean after use!, I think your shoulder will groove from the stock before the barrel takes a pattern!

You don't have to worry that the lead will wear the barrel due to slugs. What's more likely to wear out is the lining of your wallet for shelling out nearly $2.00 a shot! I put a scope on my 870 for deer and ran out of money before I got the scope sighted in! Not to mention 12ga slugs are just plain mean in terms of recoil. Still, if you must persist, I'd really recommend one of those extended rifled choke tubes. My groups shrank appreciably and the tube was cheaper than 10 slugs! Speaking of barrel wear, I read somewhere that "Hevi shot" will seriously wear out a barrel.

To quote an old Kinks tune: Paranoia Will Destroy Ya! No worries mate!
Just keep er clean!!

Lead is far softer than steel. The second point is that the "rifled" slug does not spin , the rifling has nothing to do with that .It's there only for those who might use a slug in a full choked barrel and to take care of other variations in barrel dimensions.

METE is correct

A rifle slug doesn't spin. G&A did a test on this a few years back and it has
been proven that they dont spin in the bore. There is, however, some evidence to suggest that they spin after leaving the barrel. Providing the
choke doesn't compress the slug and destroy the lands and grooves on the
slug, they act as vanes (like on an arrow). This would assume a cylinder
bore barrel, designed for slugs, and I don't imagine much rotation from the
slug. Rifle choke tubes, and bore obviously work better, but I don't do too
bad on my cylinder bore slug barrel (3-4") at 50 yards. They old timers
at my club say that pratical accuracy for deer is minute of pie plate, meaning
when you can't keep it on a pie plate it "Ain't Good Nuff". I can usually
keep it on a pie plate out to about 90 yards. Another point to consider
if you want 2'' groups at 100yds, your going to go broke quickly.

5rds rilfe slugs= 3 bucks
5rds sabot slugs= 12bucks

cylinder bore rifle sight barrel=125 bucks
rifle bore rifle sights= 200 bucks

get it ?

unfortunately, i think we all do...

(WARNING: the following is a frustrated rant writen by a poor colledge student who is getting fed up with exorbitant ammo costs...)

I live i a state thats shotguns and muzzle loaders only (and handguns), and its SO STUPID. the COST of using a shotgun to hunt deer is stagering! At best im paying $.80 per round to shoot "El-cheapo" foster slugs out of my 50 year old shotug (A5). Combine that with the fact that im STUCK with a full choke and a NON-REMOVABLE bird sight, and im limited to 25 yards IF THAT.

combine this wit the fact that i cant handle more 5 rounds in a sitting, and its bassicaly impossible for me to hunt deer with a Long gun. NOW add to this the fact that im not yet old enought to purchase my own handgun (i am old enought to OWN handguns )and that i dont have one of sufficient power to hunt deer, And my only option left for hunting bug game is a Bow wich i have ever been able to get the hang of, even after multiple years of shooting it in the off-season.

The LUDICROUS price of modern slugs, combined with te fact that NOONE will make smoot bore slug guns anymore has basicaly sealed off deer hunting for me untill I can buy my own handgun.

i was considering buying a STeoger M2000 combo with the field barrel, and the slug barrel with Adjustable iron Sights (Wich had a Cylinder bore) BUT they have since decided to stop making those barrels and replaced them with a fully rifled cantilever barrels. AAAARRRRRRRGGGGGG!

Im getting realy sick of this. If i didnt know better id say that the governemtn and manufacturors are conspiring agains the shotgun hunters.

I can see the board meeting now:

Joe Suck-up: "hey, lets force shotgun hunters to buy scopes AND pay 5 times more for ammo!"

Boss man: "brilliant Joe! We'll make a ton of money buy fleecing these stupid hunters"

Board in unison: "MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA"

SO untill i can find an A5 Relacement barrel with a cylinder bore and rifle sights, or Seller and Bellot starts making $.40 Saboted slugs, My fellow shotun hunters and I are shafted as far as big game.

Wow, i feal much better :)

Why not get a used bolt action 12ga smoothbore? I've seen them for $60-$100 around here in MA, and MA is high on firearms prices.

S&B has a "rifled" 1 oz slug that I do OK with in my Persuader. Only $2.00 for 5 from Cabela's. Haven't tried it past 25 yards as my sights weren't up to the task and it's just my HD gun. Something to look into though since their half the price of what you've been getting.

Federals are 4 bucks for 5. We get one deer per year here (unless you draw an extra whitetail doe). I can't imagine shooting up a whole box of slugs and NOT filling my tag. I think much of the super accurate slug stuff is not necessary to zap a whittail within 75 yards.

Mr. Trooper, does your A-5 have a vent rib? If so, there are clamp on sights for them (like rifle sights) and they work well (add Loc-Tite). Second, one of the best slugs out there is K.O. Brennekes, Dicks usually has'em.

Bear Gulch, agree completely. I was stationed at Ft. Benning and had to use slugs. While you really need a rear sight to get your SG to perform, many a deer was killed with a cheap slug. :)

Yea, iv been considering clamp on sights, but since the A5 barrel reciprocates, i was wary as to placement. iv looked at the SB slugs, and they are quite a deal! i love that company.

Ill have to order a case or two.

Trooper, those clamp ons should work fine. The set I have around here somewhere aree held on my four screws - I'd imagine some clear fingernail polish or Loc-Tite would keep'em from flying off. :)

Before I purchased a case of slugs (SB?), I'd check'em out in my gun. Some gun/ammo combinations don't work well.

My old Benelli Nova Tactical SP with ghost rings and a smoothbore barrel using Remington Reduced Recoil slugs would do headshot on a human silhouette on demand at 100 yards from the prone.

What's your problem? Get good sights and some RR slugs.

Try the Rottweil Blitz. You should be able to find 'em for $1.99/5 at bigger sporting goods stores. Cabelas had them on sale in Dec. for $1.79 a box. Check their website.
Very accurate in my SG. Plenty accurate in any other SG for the BA/UU/R ritual.

Rifled sluds are not really "rifled", per se. It is just sort of a thin lead flange to allow the slug to pass through a relatively tight choke and yet still seal in a less consticted bore. It just swages down as required to pass through the bore. All that being said, I wouldn't want to shoot one through an extra full turkey tube. All things have their limits.
Just shoot.

Anyone notice those "reduced recoil" slugs shoot quite abit higher than the full throttle ones?
My buddies and I were sighting our shotties in for an up coming class. I got a couple cases of Rem reduced recoil ones and my guns and a friends gun were about 6-8" higher with the reduced recoil slugs at 25 yards , quite a sight correction! ;)
