I trained on M16s in the army, and I’ve taken week-long courses where I fired an AR or a Scar, and I’ll readily admit that the ergonomics of the AR are almost perfect.

But…

I’ve never liked the .223, and AR10s are just…not what I’d hoped they’d be. My favorite rifles have always been M1A and Garands, so I finally built this monstrosity:

  • SOCOM-16 platform (you’re giving up too much velocity! You can’t easily suppress it!)
  • Archangel CQB stock
  • Ultimak M8 rail
  • EOTech mounted up front on a riser to see over the
  • DBAL illuminator
  • Surefire light, and a Surefire switch that drives both the illuminator and the light
I love it. It’s what I’ve wanted since i started looking for semiauto 308s.

I love it in spite of its flaws.

anyone else have weird preferences in rifles? Or dedicated slug guns that are your go-to just because of irrational preferences?

For hunting, I will occasionally use something old and interesting like a Krag carbine or 94 with iron sights in favor of something more modern with a scope- I usually do this once with the gun in question (after confirming zero) and then just clean it and put it away. Not a problem limiting myself to irons where I do most of my deer hunting, since 50 yards or less is typical. Next I want to use my 1903A3 or Remington model 11 with #1 buck.

Yes. My Remlin 1984CB. .357 octagon barrel.

I know it's not a "JM" stamped marlin. Its a badly made, rough as a cobb, bad copy put out by Remington.

But it don't know that. Well fitted, very smooth, accurate. I sold a JM marked 357 carbine that was awesome and kept this one.

But, I get a bit of flack from some some of the folks at the range, until I start cutting up the x ring. I've even been offered some stupid $. Never sell one that shoots that good. My favorite long gun of all time. There are a lot of great guns that have fell by the wayside.

I don't have any heirs so I don't know who's going to get it, but I'll have this rifle until my last day.

Or I'll give it to some young person that impresses me one day.

I kinda want a SOCOM, but man they are LOUD! lol.

My head scratcher would be my 4-digit Universal Carbine. Apparently its never heard of the Internet so it doesn't know that its supposed to be inaccurate, or unreliable. Personally, I think its quite the looker too.
Granted, its got a lot of GI parts stuffed in it now, but this thing easily outshoots my '43 Inland original.

Mines a 20XXX, and I agree, these early ones are great shooters.

Just Right carbine

It has funky bolt, no LRBHO, weird mag release and flathead "screws" for receiver but can quickly convert to 9mm/40S&W/45ACP with modular Glock/M&P/1911 mag wells. 1:16 barrel twist rate has produced smaller groups than 1:10 PCC barrels and is "packable" using Take Down Tube.

You must be my brother from another mother.

move got one of those in .45ACP that I had cut down to a 6” barrel with a suppressor nearly permanently mounted (you read that right - 2 tax stamp). It’s a blast though

I recommend you obtain spare bolt and extractor parts for any future needs.
Especially the extractor when it suddenly departs for destinations unknown (gets lost very easily)
Having spare parts take some of the sting out of those “oh-****” moments!
My Universal carbine was extremely accurate and fun….. (but I kept trading up until I had rifle in 7.62 NATO)

I bought a spare extractor, spring, detent, firing pin and return spring set years ago. Got all the same for Garand too. :)
