RIG Grease No Longer Available

If you live near an Academy, they still have some RIG in stock. It's on clearance now (less than $3). They had RIG rags and RIG bronze brushes (didn't even know they made bronze brushes) on clearance, too. Got another 3 oz. size when I heard this news. I should be set for the next 20 years or so.

"any other good products to use instead?"

Well you know, I just don't know. I know there are plenty of good greases for lubing the moving parts and good oils/waxes/greases/etc. for rustproofing the outside, but RIG is all I've ever used that does both.

I mostly use RIG on the outside and in the bore for long-term storage. The little tubes and syringes of gun grease that I own are prohibitively expensive for wiping down dozens of firearms.

For rustproofing a shotgun for saltwater duck hunting I strip it down and spray it inside and out with Sheath (or whatever the new name of Sheath is).

Honestly, just about anything works fairly well. Some of us just have favorites.

(I have a good supply of RIG, thank the Lord, but there is at least one easily availble substitute; outboard "hi-pressure" grease. It has excellant lub and rust protection qualities and it's easy to get from any marine dealer. Comes in what looks like a large toothpaste tube.)

Jolly Rogers: - "Is it sort of amber/clear like RIG? "

No,. Mine is from Johnson/Evinrude (OMC) and it's blue but, when applied thin, it is has no more color than RIG. And boy, it does protect from rust!

FYI, I received my order from the Shotgun Sports Magazine link posted in this thread and the shipment didn't include the RIG grease. On the invoice it stated they were backordered.

Wonderful. Anybody have any sources? I wouldn't mind a few extra jars.

How long can RIG last, once opened? I have an opened jar, but I use it very slowly.

It lasts about forever.

"didn't include the RIG grease"

My order didn't include the large jars of RIG, so I called about the B/O written on the sheet. The woman who answered said they were expecting the second half of their order after Labor Day and it would be shipped as soon as it was packed it jars. Sounds like they bought out the remaining bulk inventory.

I picked up two of the 3-ounce jars of RIG in Academy the other day. At present usage rates, I'm likely to be a dim memory for my grandkids (who, I hope, won't be born for about another 20 years) before it runs out (I only use it on a RIG rag to protect the outside of my carry .45 before sticking it in the drawer at night). I'll probably begin to use it on some other guns, particularly the bores, now that I have "so much" of the stuff.

Regarding the outboard engine hi-pressure grease, here's a website where the blue stuff is sold (not affiliated with me at all): http://www.usboatsupplies.com/mm5/m...ode=775777&Category_Code=BEJE&Store_Code=USBS

This stuff may turn out to be better - and cheaper. I've found that basic materials used in industrial-sized quantities for highly stressful activities tend to be cheaper if the word "gun" isn't on the packaging.

RIG Grease

Just did a little phone calling because I was getting low. I talked with Birchwood Casy and as of 3/1/09 they purchased the rights to RIG grease and said that they will be offering this product in thier containers from sometime late this fall to early next spring.

I got some RIG back in the 70's when the gettin' was good.
Grease is the word, is the word that you heard. It's got groove it's got meaning

You should be happy that birchwood casey took it over. They make good products and its good to see that they picked this up.

I am experimenting with RIG #2 and it seems to do a good job.
